You can alter backgrounds by using sky replacement dialed down. Here is an example.

Sky replacement doesn't always work like that... it can give you an error msg if no sky is detected.

Yes it doesn't always work. I don't get an error msg it's just not available with some images.

I tried it and it told me it couldn't replace the sky because it could not find any sky... not really an error msg.
