I appreciate your advice. This was a real sun flare with no specialty filter. I’m pretty sure I was in manual mode, which I like to use on a tripod.

I haven’t had much experience shooting sun flares, and I probably pulled the trigger as soon as I saw the beams of light. Next time I’ll play with the adjustments more.

I seem to be a slow learner, but I’m making progress. Thanks again.

Photography is sometimes a race where the slowest one wins, either setting up meticulously or waiting for the decisive moment. Or both.

Wonderful advice.

It also helps to know certain parameters, like the minimum shutter speed for moving subjects. I blew this one a few weeks ago by shooting my grandchildren jumping off a large rock into a lake at 1/250. Another confession of bad judgement. 1/250 can avoid camera shake with a 200 mm lens, but it won't freeze action. I knew this in advance but guess I just wasn't thinking.

The card players are the interesting part of the photo. The starburst is way to strong. I cropped everything below the foliage line and got a rather pleasant late afternoon sunbeam photo of the card players and the field. Do you have the pixel count for this?

I also cropped the photo substantially to emphasize the card players rather than the starburst. I like this photo better.

Pixil count of the original RAW image was 6240x4160, 29.3 mb. The cropped JPEG which is attached has 2048 pixels, resolution of 300 and uses 315 kb.

Thanks for taking the time to work on this photo with me.

Thanks. Sometimes it may take a while to find the photo within the photo.

HDR would work good
Bracket 5 shots

I agree HDR might have worked well in this photo. Perhaps I will consider it next time.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Tried a little dodge and burn on the jpg, RAW file would have been better, and I am not great at it, but I dropped a lot of the dark trees - I made the pictures a little hot, but others are right. The sunburst was cool, card players were hiding, lots of dark around edges and the sunburst is the center focus.

I like your edit, other than the dull grey color of the sun. I'm sure that area was just blown out, but it ruins an otherwise excellent edit. Thanks for your input.

I have had difficulty editing this photo. The sunstar is brighter than the card players, who are the main subject of the photo. Any thoughts on how to shift focus to the card players?

Be brutal in your criticism if appropriate. Thanks.

The bright sun will always drown out everything else because its so bright. So try cropping out most of the sun but leave in just a little to explain the sun rays that are illuminating the card players.

An excellent crop. I believe the photo is now zeroing in on its subject, the card players, with the few sun rays being sufficient. Thanks.

Using the adjustment brush in LR we can shift the focus as in the first photo. Still... The sun is drawing the eyes away from the players. Using a heavy crop to eliminate the sun we can still use the trees as a frame to draw focus to the card players.
