I have the d7200 and both an 18-140 and an 18-300 zoom lenses. Once I got the 18-300 I have rarely used the 18-140 or any of my other lenses. I am not yet sold on mirrorless. The d50 felt lacking in my hands and I really don’t want a full frame camera.

My suggestion would be the d500 with the 18-300 lens if you can stretch your budget. If not then either the 7200 or 7500 would be perfect. If you do a lot of video would go with the 7500, otherwise the 7200 would be a great upgrade. If he goes with either an 18-140 or 18-300 then the current lens will only be a backup in case of damage or failure.

I was in a similar position with a D5200 and 16-85 lens. That's a good camera and a good lens. But when I wanted to move up I decided to go for a proper step up and went for a full frame mirrorless, the Z5, which is an excellent camera. There's a choice of kit lenses - the 24-70 f/4 and the 24-200. I got the 24-70, which is a very good lens, but doesn't cover telephoto, which you say your nephew uses sometimes. My Z5 + lens cost ~£1500, so you would be something very similar in dollars.

One possibility is to get the Z5 + 24-70 and keep the D80 + the telephoto lens, or possibly get a second hand D7200 (which I very nearly did) for telephoto.

I really appreciate the knowledge, experience, and time spent that has gone into all the UHH replies I've received. I will ask if my nephew wants to go mirrorless and forward all these wonderful responses to his father. Thank you!

Old oddball here. Go mirrorless or go less.

So my nephew is turning 31 next month. His father will contribute to a new camera body for this occasion and is asking me for advice. I am a Canon and Fuji user so have no experience with Nikon. My nephew has been using a Nikon D60 with 18-55 kit lens, and perhaps an additional consumer telephoto. He is a very creative photographer and has taken many great pictures with this modest equipment, as evidenced in his Flickr account: (Flickr.com/photos/casualcapture) and many published photos in local newspapers.

Would appreciate any and all suggestions. Have not received feedback yet as to whether he wants to go mirrorless. If so, I suppose a Nikon Z5 with an adapter for his lenses seems the answer from my quick research. Or Z50 with new lenses. I think budget would be up to $1500 for the body. Nikon D850 is almost $3K so that seems out of reach.

Z50 is crop sensor. Z5 is full frame as is Z6, Z6 II, Z7 and Z7 II.

Also, Z6 is currently on sale (body only) for $1399 and the Z5 is a few hundred cheaper. This is a Nikon sale and all authorized dealers will sell for that price.

People seem set on the D7200 and an 18-140 lens. I'm a Canon guy so I'll just go with the flow. Plus the super wide that Paul mentioned. If he wants more reach, now or later, he can always buy a four to six hundred lens from one of the above mentioned sellers. That should take care of his needs, each and every one! Harry PS I've never needed more than a 300mm with a 1.4 extender but then I ain't much of a photographer!

It is not only what he has photographed, but also what he wanted to photograph/grow in to that he currently can't do. He has the ONLY answer to supply of what he would like to do better and also do in the near future.

The 18-55 kit lens should be dumped/sold. It served a purpose for a "price". It is not suitable for a more modern crop sensor or full frame image of his future. He should investigate options in resolution and zoom range of possible lenses he would be owning and using. He should be involved in the camera choice (benefits) and the lens choice or choices he will be using/living with.

D500 that several have suggested is $100 off on new camera right now. But with the $1500 budget, that gets you just the camera body.

People seem set on the D7200? In three pages there were four mentions of the D7200. Only in one of those was that promoted as a first choice. There have been far more suggestions for a Z50 or other mirrorless. Personally, if I’m buying someone a camera as a gift it’s not gonna be a used camera that is 6 year old technology.
