South of the Main Boulevard, in close proximity to the New Palace stands the Temple of Friendship which, together with an adjacent structure, is the subject of todays set of images.

TEMPLE OF FRIENDSHIP (Freundschaftstempel) - A small, round building in Sanssouci Park, built by King Frederick II of Prussia in memory of his sister, Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia, who died in 1758. The building, in the form of a classical temple, was built south of the park's main boulevard between 1768 and 1770, it complements the Temple of Antiquities, which lies due north of the boulevard on an axis with this temple. To honor the memory of Wilhelmine, Frederick chose the form of an open, round temple with a shallow domed roof supported by eight Corinthian columns. This monopteros type architectural structure has its origins in ancient Greece, where such buildings were erected over cult statues and tombstones. In a shallow alcove at the back wall of the temple is a life-sized statue of Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, holding a book in her hand. The marble figure is based on a portrait painting. The medallions on the columns depicting pairs of friends in classical antiquity as well as the book in Wilhelmine's hand point to her fascination with that era.

Another great set Joe. I really like the detail in the statue of Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, as well as the Trellised gazebo near the Temple of Friendship. Great shots.

Thanks Vince, like you, I do also like this particular set, first the temple of friendship itself, then its location in the lightly wooded area and then the interesting sculpture with great details of Wilhelmine and her dog. Similarly, that trellised gazebo is a beauty of its own, and then really shines with small sections of the intricate work against the blue sky - we were quite happy there in that spot.

Another very enjoyable set Joe!
Your images really showcase the gazebo and temple.
While I don't like being so busy as to not keep up on the series, catching up, makes for an enjoyable morning with coffee and a European tour to start my day!
Thanks for taking us along on this great journey!
Rob

Again, thank you Rob for taking your time to look at all these presentations and enjoying them, together with Genevieve who, as it sounds, is also enjoying her coffee and hopefully the pictures. My greetings to her! Joe
