I wouldn't want to have to carry all that. . .

In My Humble Opinion:

A cell phone takes a picture

A Camera takes a Photograph

No clear difference between them . . .

A photographer can use a simple camera (cellphone, point and shoot), or a more complex camera - to record an image. An artist can take that image and turn into something special -

Merriam-Webster defines a "camera" as

a device that consists of a lightproof chamber with an aperture fitted with a lens and a shutter through which the image of an object is projected onto a surface for recording (as on a photosensitive film or an electronic sensor) or for translation into electrical impulses (as for television broadcast)

So a cell phone camera is as real a camera as a Sony a1, Canon r5, or Nikon Z7.

But my "real" camera is best at what it was built for........that phone is not an expert at any of those features as it has too many in one. I prefer the many features of my SLR Canon cameras.

A real camera is any device that can capture a film or digital image.

The cell phone camera is the Brownie of the 21st century.

"real camera" = a dedicated camera with more features than the cameras built into most cellphones.
Many photo classes now require the students to start with a cell phone before moving on to dedicated "real" cameras just so they have to learn composition etc.

Way back in the day, as learners, we were to take our camera, pick one film type and one lens drop the battery and learn how to properly expose process ones images. Fun times. The "yellow box" had a ton of information on a long strip of paper (and seasoned folks knew which end of the box to open if they didn't want to deal with it) FWIW, I used my "nifty fifty" and Tri-X because I could push/pull it in processing. I've kinda' wondered how they'd go about doing that now with modern digital equipment not to mention getting the battery out of an iphone.

For cryin' out loud, David. The simple answer is "Control." Today's cell phones can (I think in most cases) allow one to zoom-in or zoom-out. But they don't allow for changing f/stop for creative effect, or changing the White Balance, again, for creative effect. Or changing focus or shutter speed. "Smart phones" are in effect what shooters years ago would refer to as a "PHD" camera --- Push Here, Dummy. They are simply a recording device.

Some phones have apps that allow more control of the camera and even record raw files.

In making this comparison... let's not forget the "snob" element.

So do I. I also prefer it over my bridge camera.

But a phone camera is still a camera.
Different body (case), different controls.

Smartphone photography has become another branch of photography, like the division of film and digital, each has it's own parameters, advantages and limitations. The kind of thinking that refuses to see advances in technology as an improvement has been described as Luddite (look up the term). For those that think smartphones are not "real" cameras check out the winners of the IPPAwards. It is an international contest for smartphone images only, if an entry is affected in any way by a desktop program it is immediately disqualified. The winning images (yes, I consider all photographs no matter how they are generated as images) are nothing short of spectacular.

By that, they mean something sold as a camera, rather than a phone that includes a camera.
