Jerry, are you familiar with MSCONFIG, if not go to run and type in MSCONFIG, it lists all the programs running in the background. In MSCONFIG go to the startup tab, click on that and uncheck everything, it will not hurt anything and all your programs will run normally, they will just
not be running in the background and a bonus is that it will speedup your computer a little bit, try it you will like it.

I mentioned a month or more ago that my son's Dell XPS 8940 has the hard drive going wild whenever he leaves it for a couple of minutes. It's non-stop hard drive activity - very noisy. If I go over and touch the keyboard or mouse, it stops, so Task Manager can't tell me what it's doing. Security programs haven't found anything harmful on the drive. I have an XPS 8930, and that never behaves like that. Obviously, the computer feels a need to do something, but what? And why? This can't be good for the health of the drive.

Have you checked the Event Logs?

A couple of comments over this suggestion:
1) startup has been moved to task manager, I think with Windows 10
2) doing that can prevent important applications to not run in the background, like file sync apps. The user would surely regret that.

You are right about it being to the Task Manager. Wrong about keeping programs from running, and if by chance it does, you can always go back and put a check on it. Apps are not programs, Juan.

The difference between apps and programs was created only by usage of the words, generally using "apps" (abbreviation of "applications") to those in mobile devices, but they are indeed the same. They are programs/applications that run on an operating system.

I didn't say if would prevent from running, but if the background application/program in charge of file syncing or real-time virus scanning, etc. is not executed at start-up..........it won't run (and do its job) until the user explicitly executes the program/application.

Yes, it can be reverted by checking the option again. But your suggestion never mentioned to be careful on what was left unchecked, and could cause trouble to the user in the mid term.

I was a computer tech. before retiring a few years back, an app. is a shortcut to a program. It is funny that my MSCONFIG is all unchecked and my PC is still running and has been for years.

Actually it still exists as the Windows key.

Make sure monitor is in no sleep mode, start task manager to the screen you want and since it automatically refreshes when you walk back don’t touch anything and you should see what your trying to find.

So I start Task Manager before it starts going wild. Good idea.

Sounds like defrag. Sometimes machines are set to defrag when not in use.
Glad I switched to sod’s for the main drive years ago

No smart phone. I have a 20-year old flip phone without a camera. It is a Samsung but it has a large display and a fairly large number pad. I am not smart enuf to use a new smart phone. At my age my brain has turned to mush!

I have a smart phone, and it comes in handy. I don't make the best use of it, though. I occasionally click on Messages, and I see texts that people sent me days ago.

I probably should get with the times and get a smart fone since texting with this old flip fone is next to impossible. It can be done but doing so is very labor intensive. And I have cognitive problems dealing with these electronic do-dads.
