Is there any changeability between CF and QXD cards? Can I put a CF card in a QXD card slot without damaging my camera? I only use my camera for stills, so I was wondering if I could replace a QXD card with a CF card in a pinch

Depends upon the camera set up.

Not if you are talking about the original Compact Flash cards which have been around for 15+ years.

And....you can only do it with the compact Express B cards IF your model accepts them AND you have any necessary firmware upgrades installed. Plan ahead.

Basic CF. No, nada, zilch.

Thanks for replying. How do I tell the difference between the old and the Express B cards. I bought them to use with an Nikon 800e when it came out.

Easy. If it fits in a d800e, then it is compact flash.

CE-b is a totally different size, not even close to cf.

Qxd will say so on the label. Currently only made by sony. Can find lexar used.

Thanks so much. I have two QXD’s and only one of them is made by SONY. There are about 5 manufacturers now, but that has not led to price competition

One more question then. Will both CF cards go in a Nikon D800e?

D800e has 2 slots. One for cf and one for sd. You cannot run 2 cf s at the same time. Will each of your 2 cf cards fit in the slot? If they are labelled as cf and look the same, yes. Even so, if you are unsure proceed slowly and carefully the first time. You Do Not want to bend the connector pins in the camera.

Thanks, I did know that. What I wasn’t aware of was the existence of CF B (or Fast CF) cards — just CF, SD, and QXD cards. It seems there’s not much difference between CF B cards and QXD cards including the price.

Correct me if I’m wrong, please?

Quickly --- fast cf is a totally different beast in the zoo of memory cards. Dont go there.

In the future there will be a very big difference for CE B cards once the camera hardware adapts to take advantage of the much larger data pipelines offered by that format. For now not so much. But if you buy the new cards now, one less upgrade to make later.

You would find all you need to know by going to google and type in "cf-b cards".
You obviously have not been reading much on here if you have to ask these questions.
Plus a good look through your camera manual would help you a lot.
If you don't have a manual then download one.
And in future you would get help a lot quicker (other than by doing this basic research first yourself) by mentioning first time round what camera make and model you have.
Arrgh why do I bother ?

Why do you bother? Maybe to assist a community member in need of an answer? Sometimes a quick interpretation from someone who knows is better than trying to decipher tomes of web data. If you don’t want to assist our community, why do you read and reply with attitude? We have an opportunity to support, teach and learn here, let’s use this forum with responsibility, compassion and kindness, not nasty condescending commentary. Teaching by diatribe rarely works and makes the teacher look incompetent.

Because sometimes community members don't do all the things they should do before asking their questions. It often takes maybe 15 seconds to find an answer for themselves. Or they ask it here and waste 100,000 members time while they read the question and decide to/or not answer. And to take up how much bandwidth for this to reach worldwide. And often the answers I see indicate that other community members actually don't know so we have the blind leading the blind. I read and reply with attitude because I want to shock people into learning to help themselves. There are a heap of questions on here that I consider very relevant and I will do my best to help, can't stand people who aren't prepared to do the basics themselves. I see you used the word, responsibility, but I often don't see that being applied. Too many people use reading the manual as a last resort because often they are too lazy to look for themselves. Probably the same people who park in disabled parks because they might have to walk too far.

What you say has some validity. I respect and encourage thought, however, I don’t think teaching by diatribe is effective, it makes the teacher look incompetent.

XQD cards, along with CFExpress cards do use the same connector. They are not both necessarily useful in the same camera body unless it contains firmware for both. The Compact Flash card is an older type, but is still useful in many cameras. Its physical size and connector is totally different than the other two. IMHO, the CFExpress card is the best of the bunch due to its increased speed, and thus throughput. Best of luck.
