Not too long ago I worked as an usher in a movie theater. I was told by the house manager that the movie theater companies actually don't make any money from ticket sales. The prices are set by the production companies and all proceeds go to them as well. The only proceeds the movie theater companies rely on are from the concession profits. Yes, when you go to a movie theater you are essentially at their mercy when it comes to concession prices, sort of a captive audience if you will, and prices do seem rather inflated, but considering that's the only way the house makes any profit, it's understandable.
Consider this; Seeing a movie at the theaters is a service, If you go to a movie and by a ticket without buying anything from the concession, your getting that service for free. The house makes nothing, but it does supply the tickets, the personnel that cleans the theaters, shows the movies, maintains the restrooms, the lights, the AC, the parking lot, etc, etc. All in hopes you would buy something from their inflated cost concession stand.

Way back in the 1950's we snuck candy/snacks into movie theaters. A 5 cent candy bar cost 6 cents inside the theater. The Coca-Cola was served in a paper cup and had to be consumed in the lobby. We put 1 or 2 bottles of soda in the sleeve of our coats. The popcorn was sometimes stale, just reheated from the last show, maybe a few days ago. The side show at the theater was watching fools use the soda vending machine; it was supposed to drop a cup, ice, syrup, seltzer in that order. Too often someone put waxed cups in the vender, they always stuck together and would not drop so the sucker watched the ingredients pour down the drain. Even if the cups were UNwaxed you had about 2 minutes to drink a 10 ounce soda before the cup disintegrated in your hand.

It's a "Fairbairns Film" Youtube production. The boys that do them are as lame as they get... ya gotta love em though.

Is that constant camera movement supposed to be "artistic"?

Which is why I no longer go to the movies.

When I was a kid, I went to our local theater and asked for a ticket. "How old are you?" "I'm 12." "You're adult, so you have to pay the adult price."

I turned and started home. On the way, I met my younger brother walking to the theater, and I gave him my money. I thought of stopping on the way home to buy a beer and a gun - since I was an adult - but I had given all my money to my brother.

Speaking of accents, I have a story. A few years ago, my family went to Cape May, NJ, and we toured the boardwalk. There was a photo shop that dressed you in various costumes and took your picture. Most of the young people working there had Irish accents. I asked the girl helping us where in Ireland she was from. She replied, "Oh, I'm not from Ireland. I picked up the accent by working with all the Irish exchange students." I thought that was interesting.

I still go to the movies, I just don't buy any concessions. For the cost of popcorn and a drink, I can have a actual meal in a restaurant before or after the movie. I love seeing movies in a theater, and have been able to resume doing so now that I am vaccinated. AMC theaters have a rewards program which costs $23 a month and covers up to 3 movies a week, including the premium theaters like IMAX and Dolby. For those theaters, one movie almost covers the monthly cost. And you still earn rewards based on what the movies would cost which you can use for concessions.
