The rainbow appears to be holding up some dark clouds. Not natural. Was this over-processed?

Nope, optical illusion. It often happens with this type of capture.

OK. I looked back at a picture of a rainbow that I made in 2006 and it was uniformly darker above the rainbow and lighter below it and the lighter portion was more pronounced than in your picture. There must be more refraction going on.
