Does anyone have experience buying cameras from Japan? I often see cameras on Ebay that look good at a better price than are available from the US. Any help would be appreciated.

Several times. Always immaculate and as advertised. Pick a top rated or experienced seller and free shipping.

EDIT: I have only bought used from Japan!

I do need the warranty. I have used the warranty several times. But I think the OP was talking about old stuff which the warranty expired many years ago.

I haven’t bought cameras, but I have bought lenses from Japan through eBay. They have all been in top notch condition. The lenses I have bought have all been out of production, but looked and worked like they were fresh from the factory.

Very, very few times since 1975, but no cost involved because of USA warranty.

My girlfriend brought brand new D7100 four years ago from Japan. Great deal and no problems to date.

I am 93 years old and have been buying cameras and lens most of my adult life and have never needed any kind of warranty. Never had a problem that warranty would cover.

Buying used I find a better option than buying new. You lose heaps reselling a new camera that turned out to not be what you'd wanted. Reselling used gear you can often get back what you paid for it.

I didn't really see that in his post.

That being said I did buy a 70-210 AF-D lens from a Japanese seller for about $90 that looked almost new.

I was more comfortable buying a lens rather than a camera because it seemed Nikon was more confident in the reliability of their lenses offering a 5 year warranty (at that time) but only a 1 year warranty on thair cameras.

And it's not just a matter of the warranty being expired, but the fact that Nikon USA won't even work on a camera produced for another market even if you offer to pay.

Don't forget to look at the seller's feedback. Generally it's a good sign if the Ebay seller has sold many items and has a high ratings score as well. The great majority of Japanese Ebay sellers who export abroad have very high ratings, and not just for cameras and lenses, but for other stuff too. It seems Japanese sellers as a whole take extraordinary pride in honesty and customer satisfaction. From my experience, items bought from Japanese Ebay sellers are always immaculately clean, which is something I definitely cannot say about U.S. sellers.

I have bought many cameras from just about everywhere. The ones I purchased from Japan are always great , beautiful and fully functional. If there are any issues, they are described fully, if it arrives not to your liking, they will make things right. I have received extra gifts as well from ones I have bought from, the service has been like the old days. I have never had a problem with any purchase from the land of the rising sun.
