I wish to upgrade my format to Full FX.
Does anyone know about Nikon's plans for a new model such as a D860 or D900?
I do not wish to purchase a D850 and have it out of date in the near future.
(I currently have a D500 which I will sell, and two FX lenses.)

Nobody really knows but my guess is that you're safe with the D850 as I don't think Nikon will introduce another DSLR. So you will always have the latest....

Even if they introduce a replacement the D850 will be a great camera for many, many years ahead. It is so feature-rich.

The D850 will likely be Nikon's final high-end DSLR. Canon has no new DSLRs at any level planned. Nikon's plans are less clear, although they have no new models publicly announced either.

You can think what you want but back in November of last year Nikonrumors posted that it was confirmed that Nikon will release several new F mount lenses this year and will reportedly be releasing 2 new DSLRs this year, one thought to be a D850 upgrade.
At that time they said Nikon DSLRs were still outselling the Z, but felt that would change in about 60 days.

If you want to use NikonRumors as your source, now in May 2021 they're reporting Nikon is slowly stopping production of F-mount lenses.

Not trying to be augmentative, but what upgrades do you think a Nikon "860" would incorporate from the 850 (one of the highest acclaimed DSLRs in almost all areas) that would be worth the likely huge $ difference between a new camera and an older, possibly discontinued or soon to be discontinued 850. What aspect of your photography do you see needing that potential upgrade and is it worth the extra $ and the (possibly significant, possibly infinite) period of time until a "860" release date? Everyone makes their own decision, and there are no "wrong" answers and maybe $ is no object, but I would not hesitate to think that the $1000+ saved on buying the retired camera body would not be better served investing $1000+ in new glass. But of course all conjecture as the "860" doesn't exist to evaluate so it could be an extraordinary upgrade, I just would be shocked if that were true as I have to assume an overwhelming amount of Nikon R&D since the 850 has been focused on mirrorless.

There may or may not ever be an update of the D850. Whatever comes is very unlikely to be an "upgrade," because there is not much functionality that could be added to what the D850 already offers. You are certainly free to wait, but my take is that you are shutting yourself out of a very meaningful improvement over your current D5500 in the hopes of something that may never come. I would suggest that you look very carefully at the D850, perhaps even rent one, and see just what it is that you would like to have that it does not already offer.
There is a very twisted fixation here on having "the latest technology." I get quite a kick out of it, especially when one considers that most of us as members are a long way from being the latest technology ourselves. It will be a long time before the D850 is "out of date."

If you’re waiting for the latest technology in cameras (or computers or automobiles or...). You’ll never buy anything. The D850 is in the top tier of the finest DSLRs ever made, so not that much (if any) room for improvement. I have to assume that Nikon is pouring all their research $ into mirrorless like everyone else, so if you want one of the best DSLRs ever made, buy it!

Canon has already quit the SLR scene. That should tell you what you need to know about Nikon.

Yup, or if you’re not in a a hurry, instead of waiting for an improvement to the 850 you can wait for improvement to its price.
If you’re patient enough you’ll get two for the price of one. That way you’ll remain in the classic SLR realm well beyond the foreseeable future.

The D850 was released in 2017. It remains cutting edge, while also being outdated. Find a used model, don't pay a premium in new money for a new copy of an old camera.
