I'm not surprised by what you found. Who knows what lies behind those heavy black covers. Most of the larger format batteries of all types are made up of several smaller cells to get the voltage or current that is needed. At least these are re-chargeable Lithium Ion cells. Even electric Lithium Ion car batteries are constructed from many small cells.

They look like double A’s.

Close. They're slightly longer and have a diameter that's larger than an AA battery.

I think they're 18650's. I use them in a HID flashlight.

They are 48.5mm long x 18mm in diameter.

Those seem to be rechargable AA by the chart lookup in size. My mistake.

Not at all surprised !!!
Allmost all batteries supplying over 1.3-1.5 volts contain multiple cells.
I said almost because there may be some I have not heard of or not seen.

Im guessing that each cell contains two shorter 1.5v cells making the total voltage approx. 6v
The batteries for my old D70 Nikon are 7.5 volts (ENEL-3)
I had a battery for my Snap-on cordless screw drive shoot craps a couple of years ago and Snap on had no longer supplied them, I had the battery rebuilt at Batteries Plus for $25 the main reason was this drill was great for small screws and had a fantastic battery life before needing a recharge, each cell in the battery pack was made up of thin disk batteries wrapped in heat shrink.

Each cell is 3.7V making a total of 7.4V. There could be 3 smaller cells in each of the cells. I'll have to investigate further by opening one up.

Most likely 18500 cells. 2 would give you nominal voltage. These cells are 18mm x 50mm in size. Very unlikely to be made up of smaller cells because there is no mid cell wrinkle like on one end of each in the picture. The 500 part tells you how long the cell is, if it was a 18650 then the cells would be 65mm long. There are no other standard cell dimensions that can fit inside the shell. Other than an 18490 but this is highly unlikely. If you look carefully you can see the center contact down between the 2 cells for balancing the charging.

The battery of the Tesla car are made up of 7104 cells of the same size. So finding the 18650 cells inside a camera battery pack is of no surprise.

The 18650 Li-Ion battery cells are very popular. My coworker dropped it 18V 5.0Ah battery pack from his Milwaukee cordless drill and it cracked. He bought a new battery so I took his battery pack apart and found 10 of them inside. They have 2 5 cell in series paralleled together.
I took 4 of the cells and rebuild my Metz 60CT4 flash battery pack. Works great recycle in about half the time the NiCad packs does.

Interesting. I opened up a camcorder battery, and it also had a circuit board.

I've seen videos on YouTube about replacing those rechargeable cells in cordless tools. You need good replacement cells, strips of nickel metal, and a decent spot welder. You can make your own mini spot welder, but the results are iffy. I'd buy one if I were going to do this.

Well recelling the cordless drill battery isn't very good idea as the cells are not that much cheaper.
