The X-17 Story (1958)

A 1958 Air Force film that documents an obscure but very important missile that was used to test the effects of hypersonic flight on early reentry vehicles. The film is introduced by Major General Bernard Schriever, who was in charge of all early Air Force missile development. Early flight tests of the X-17 took place at Holloman AFB. A total of fifty-one X-17 were later launched from Pad 3 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

That was a great film, I appreciate seeing it. I spent a good bit of time at Holloman AFB and they do some really neat stuff there!

Thanks for posting! Very interesting on several levels: A look at those room-sized computers, paper graphs, and the dry, impersonal dialog of the Major General. Today they would have a spokesperson with a great personality, a white board with laser pointer, a laptop computer, enhanced graphics, onboard cameras mounted on the rocket, and powerful telephoto lenses mounted on digital cameras about 1/50th the size of those shown in the film.

Thanks for that. I like those old documentaries. They're all look and sound the same. That officer who was speaking at the end looked like a robot. Was he the best speaker they could find?

Has anyone else here ever watched that old movie "Amazon Women on the Moon?" Spoofing everything from the 50's, 60's & 70's.

One the the segments was a commercial for "Hair Looming for Men,' selling rugs for bald guys. Anyway, that character sounded exactly like General Schriever, down to the facial expression. (or lack of facial expression)

Those old sc-fi movies can be funny. I didn't see this Amazon Women movie (1987), though. I'll look for it.
