All of these photos were taken outside Natural Bridges National Monument in what was (and will be) Bears Ears National Monument. All were taken on a short warm up backpack before a 20 day hike on the southern Waterpocket Fold. Image 1 is of desert varnish on a boulder, the next 4 were of ruins in a tributary of White Canyon. Image 3 (an experiment) was of the ceiling of the ruin taken at ISO 10,000 - next time I won't go past 5,000. More coming tomorrow. Please view as downloads.

Left the long hikes behind in Uncle Sugar's Mean Green Machine! Heavy packs, too!

These are excellent and educational shots. I had never heard of desert varnish. Thanks to Google, I now know all about it! Also, I don't recall ever seeing a shot of the roof of one of these ruins. Very interesting. They're also very appealing shots to view!

My Uncle Sam long ago got me "hiked out" but you have a great time.

That ceiling shot, it is a stationary subject so no need for high ISO at all. Put the camera on a backpack or other protective surface, manually pre-focused, use the timer delay, push shutter button, lay camera down and duck out of the way with the ISO of your choice and let the camera do as long an exposure as it needs. If you don't have a separate light meter (I have several left from film days.) you might try a few shots at different setting. Or pick a very slow shutter speed and have ISO on auto. A little experimenting and a few test shots and you should find the shutter speed that will make use of your best ISO on your camera.
