Interesting read on how an iconic photographer got his 120K+ slides scanned to archive them all.

More about the hardware storing them all, but they do mention he had at least 10 iMacs connected to Powerslide X scanners scanning batches.

I have the older Powerslide 5000 scanner. I'd load up a circular tray with up to 100 slides and get it all started and walk away and 6-7 hours later I'd have all those scans done. I have 2 trays, so when one was done I'd load up another tray and take out those already scanned etc. repeat, repeat, repeat. I was amazed at how efficiently the old fashioned circular trays work, I never had a single jam.

10 scanners humming away might've given him 1000 slides scanned every 6-7 hours or so. I'm guessing he scanned them at an even higher resolution than my Powerslide scans at, so maybe his batches took longer than mine did...

Still an interesting read.

Wow. That was an amazing story! I probably had a little less than 700 slides and negatives that I've been working on, but been a lot slower going with my Epson scanner!

The original slides are the best archival form. Who knows in the world of computing and data storage what will be readable in 50 years, or even 20 years. The advantage of digital files is their ease in duplicating and distribution, for the time being.
