I don't know if there is a Microcenter near you (they have a web store, but I have never bought from it), but I have had good luck with the Microcenter house brand for both USB and SD cards. good prices and very good reliability. They used to have a lifetime guarantee, but now it is only 2 years (which is reasonable).

(it is in German, but there is a button you can click to change it to English). It fills the card up, and then makes sure that it can read it back. It takes about 2 hours for a 32 GB card. It uses up one of your write cycles (out of 10,000 or so), but it is well worth it.
It doesn't matter which manufacturer, none of them can afford to take the time to fully test the cards on their assembly line. I find that about one out of every 20-30 devices is bad, right when I first get them. So, test them right away, and take/send them back if they fail.
Verbatim (and Microcenter) = good customer service,
Kingston = not so much (after beating my head against the wall, I just gave up).

EDIT: Speaking of flash drives, these things are great for putting music into a car. My Honda Fit has several USB ports, and I have two of these with different kinds of music. They're about the size of my thumbnail.
I just got a Honda Passport and have a 64 gb thumb drive with about 100 albums on it. Plug it in and go! What a cool feature!
