d3200prime, thanks for the timely updated Nikon teleconverter compatibility list, which should interest TC users. Based a cursory review of the different Nikon TC's, it appears that the TC with the most "lens compatibility (less limitations)" on that specific list is the Nikon TC-14E II, and not TC-14E III, TC-17E's and TC-20E II & III.

The Nikon TC-14EII is older version but with more compatible lenses. Why, and what is the "trade off"?

The TC-14E I and TC-14EII are identical except for the lettering. The EIII is the latest version with the best optics. I am a confessed pixel peeper and the only time I was satisfied with the results was using a f4 lens or faster. I don't like the focus performance at f8 on my d500. I know some folks do. Everyone is entitled to their own preference. If you want more reach save your money and buy a longer lens unless you get an f4 or larger aperture. Nikon has a page showing the focus points available on the better lenses with a teleconverter. It is for a D500. The page is nps.nikonimagining.com/ technical_solutions/ d500_tips/af/focus_points/#cross-sensors. It's a great example of the focus points available with teleconverters and a 153 point focus system. The standard 51 point system has even less. Might be nice for you to see what actually happens. I have a 200-400mmf4 a 400mmf2.8 and a 600mm f4. The focus after 5.6 is not really useable in again my opinion. I shoot bif and fast moving small objects. See what you think. The Tamron 150-600 or Sigma of the same focal length are very good options for your camera and can be found at a great price used. Get the dock also. It allows you to not only fine tune the lens but also the vr or is. Whatever you prefer to call it. Used 700.00 is not unheard of.

I also forget to mention that the ,5xxx series have no f8 capable focus sensors according to Nikon. My d500 only has 15 cross type sensors that are f8 focus capable out of 153 and they are dead center in the focus array

Thanks for your TC information, ...very timely and informative.
Currently, I'm using two cameras, a Nikon D3 that I just purchased about a month ago and a D500, which are 12 and 21 mp, respectively. It's good enough for me, and "more" will not make me better nor happier.
At 73, I've consciously decide to stay with the old technology, be grateful and satisfy with what I have, which, frankly, is a lot for a hobbyist, and just master the two cameras.
I just enjoy hunting (GAS) the most, marveling at other photographer work product, and taking a few photographs with my two DSLR cameras whenever safe.
At this time, enjoying the craft of photography is rather difficult in San Francisco. Scoping out a site (composition) maybe dangerous, personal safety. Taking photos before sunrise and after sunset, poor timing. Setting up a tripod, sitting duck. Run and shoot, that no longer fun for me.
It's time to pare down by excess photography gear and to move on to other meaningful work in my own community. Thanks for listening.

Glad I could be of service. I love my d500 and like you have no desire for newer equipment. It can do more than me so until I can master it and need more I'll stick with it. I wish you a safe and happy journey. Such a shame how Frisco gas deteriorated since I lived there in the early 80s. Enjoy sir enjoy.

I am not a fan of teleconverters. They take a good lens and down grade the sharpness.

Thank you very much for your response. I kind of expected that. I will have to save and buy a bigger telephoto lens.

You can get some very good deals at the used camera gear sites.

www.keh.com

www.natcamera.com

Or, if this is a one off usage where you won’t need the lens again, rent what you need.
