Union Pacific brought No. 4014, Big Boy, through Texas in 2019 as part of a much larger tour of the country. We caught up with him in Lulling, Texas. Because of the crowds, we only chased for a little while and got one other good shot, with part of the consist, east of Flatonia.

Great photos! The second one emphasizes how huge Big Boy is, two, almost three, locomotives joined into one. The Wikipedia article on Big Boy tells us its great story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_4014

As a youth I was raised in the L.A. area and remember when Big Boy 4014 first arrived at the L.A. fairgrounds in Pomona. Before it was "fenced off" I climbed on the engine and explored it, awed by how massive it was. My sons climbed on it and my sister-in-law's sons (Who lived in Pomona) totally explored the engine. My wife and I were able to take one of the excursion rides on October 19, 2019. What an awesome experience. (There were a lot of UHH members on that ride and many of us posted pictures to UHH)

One does not understand "BIG" till one has stood beside 4014's drive wheels -

For anyone interested, there a multiple videos on You Tube showing the engine in action and also detailing the rebuild. (There are several "animated simulations" which are crap in my opinion)

Great set of pictures. I've never seen the Big Boy but this is kinda like deja vu all over again. The only place I've seen Big Boy was at the Ernest Warther Museum in Dover Ohio. Ernest Warther was a wood carver extrordinaire. His museum holds many one-of-a-kind hard carved locomotives. He carved them from photos to scale by carving individual parts from ivory and many different types of wood. The wheels and gearing all moved. One of his models is Big Boy (picture from their website). This model is about 10 ft long and contains hundreds of individual parts. If I recall their display, the actual size of Big Boy was dictated by the size of tunnels on the western rail lines and the length of the engine was limited by its' turning radius to fit down western track turns. Any longer and it wouldn't be able to fit around the "tightest turns" of the tracks.

Didn't know it still existed. Great to actually see pictures of the real thing. For any railroad buffs, the Walrther museum in Dover, Ohio is a must stop if you're in the area
