I've been watching a lot of woodworking videos on YouTube, and I'm learning a lot - a lot of things I "have to" buy.

Seriously, though, if you do a lot of woodworking and use a shop vac, you should get one of those cyclones add-ons. When I used to vacuum up sawdust, the vacuum filter would quickly get plugged up. With the cyclone, I get a bucket full of sawdust and an empty shop vac. I got the Dustopper.

The only problem is the bulkiness of two large devices. Quite a few people have built structures to keep the cyclone on top of the vacuum, so it has a smaller footprint.

This will be perfect for vacuuming in and around the wood stove. The ash plugs up the filter very quickly.

Dust collection often gets second shrift in an amateur woodworkers shop unless they are in it constantly. It’s just more fun to buy that new power tool than spend $500 or more for a dust collector. In addition to a shop vac and a dust catching “well” for my chop saw because it’s across the room from my larger collector, I have a Delta 2HP collector with 4” ducts and gates to my bigger tools. It cuts on automatically whenever I start a tool, BUT it has a big heavy cloth bag on top and a dust bag on the bottom. The bag collects most of the dust, but the smaller particles either get through the cloth bag or clog its pores reducing the efficiency. i’ve been meaning to put a cyclone in front of it, but the inlet hose is 6” in diameter, and cyclones of that size are expensive, so it always gets put off. Unfortunately, as I get older and my sinuses are acting up, I’m getting more and more allergic to dust, so I really need to change the cloth bag to a canister (which has finer filtration) and add a cyclone, but it isn’t cheap. BTW, the dust from many woods such as rosewood is toxic and can send you to the hospital with life threatening anaphylactic shock, so if you work with exotic woods, you better be careful about dust or work outside.

a wet-Dry vac to pick up water in a separate container
rather than have it go into the vac?
