I learn something new every day. I've been watching a science course on The Great Courses, and he mentioned a supernumerary rainbow. Unlike the many variations of rainbows that appear in the sky, this type cannot yet be explained.

I purchased about a half dozen of the Great Courses several years ago. Ironically I tossed them in the trash last week after trying unsuccessfully trying to give them away. Libraries and schools would not accept them due to Covid concerns.

Looks like a reflection off a CD which is really a circular difraction grating. Diffraction gratings are narrowly spaced parallel lines on a glass surface that are used like prisms to separate light rays into a spectrum.

I gave a bunch to our library several years ago. It's not accepting anything now.

Nice one! The double rainbow is caused by ice crystals in the air, as are most unusual effects. The supernumerary is still unexplained, though.

It is my understanding that rainbows and double rainbows are water droplet formed.
An excellent site is; http://www.atoptics.co.uk/bows.htm
