I decided to do another experiment...The results needed to be SOOC(straight out of camera), no post processing(even cropping). I used a Nikon 35/1.8 lens on a Nikon D7500. I used JPEG and a scene mode for blossoms. I also used auto ISO.
Apparently there are folks who mostly shoot SOOC as what they normally do...that would not be me. I normally shoot raw and post process pretty much everything.
All of these turned out to use f/8, shutter speeds at 1/60, and ISO from 800 to 2500.
In the future I would likely use raw, a similar f stop and shutter speed, and post process as wanted.
I think some people would be happy with the results from this experiment, taken yesterday at my favorite local park, Vines Park, Georgia.
deanfl, Your SOOE Framing/Composition is excellent... SOOE, Straight Out of Eye.
"In the future, I would likely use raw, a similar f stop and shutter speed"
Yes, the in-camera auto choice is quite good for a basis for your personal preference adjustments. In this case, you used auto ISO if I read your post correctly. I often rely on the oriental in my camera to do their best and then I have a start for my tweaks.

To be clear, was there a hypothesis to the “experiment”?
Lovely shots. The compositions are very inviting and the color is glorious.
It's implied. The results provide proof positive of the supposition that camera and lens settings can produce acceptable photos SOOC. A true experiment would require a control setup and an experimental setup to seek significant variance of one over the other, showing either manual or other settings as preferable for good exposure.

Beautiful! For decades SOOC was all there was. If you have a decent camera and decent shooting conditions, using JPEGs straight out of the camera will usually give you good results.
I shoot raw, so I have to process them, but that's part of the fun of shooting.
The controversy for using JPEG files will go forever when compared to RAW data. There is a place for the use of both files. For images like these I see nothing wrong shooting JPEG.

Yes, it was to determine if Ken Rockwell is right and everyone else is wrong.

These are all good. Particularly the framing SOOC where no cropping was used. This is totally unrelated to raw, or even the camera of course. Past that, it shows that jpgs straight out of the camera don't generally need a whole lot of tweaking, nothing that a jpg editor can't easily handle. I mainly shoot for the purpose of editing and I rarely shoot raw. Even when I screw up a good bit I can fix it from the jpg. In over 20 years of shooting and editing digital, I never once thought "I wish I'd a shot that in raw. I'm happiest when my photo's need some editing and a perfect shot SOOC is not what makes my day. A perfect picture when I'm finished editing is what makes my day.
I would call it a trial and not an experiment. You got nice results no matter the definition.
I think you should process the heck out of them! They look too natural to me!
Your work shows skill using SOOC and scene mode. Composition and colors are great. Never used scene mode all the years I"ve been shooting but it sure did the job foe you. Nicely done.
Well done, Dean! Excellent composition.
Thank you everyone for your comments, compliments, and relating your own personal usage. I appreciate it!
