At the end of the year it is nice to categorize expensed for tax purposes without manually having to enter them into a spread sheet. Thanks for the replies.

I never got into Quicken. At the end of the year I just sit down and go through my check book and make a list on paper of deductible expenses. Takes me 2-3 minutes.

The farm finance records were on a spreadsheet. Categorization was done that way. Making entries into a spreadsheet probably isn't much different from making entries into Quicken (although I admit I have no experience there).

If you have a lot of deductible expenses then the spreadsheet might not work for you.

But I would repeat Longshadow's suggestion that you check the email header to be sure it's from Quicken and/or any link actually goes to Quicken. Note that the text of the link may not actually give you the actual link, which could go anywhere. Depending on your email program, hovering the cursor over the link may show you what the actual link is, or right-clicking it may allow you to "copy link address", which you could then paste into something to show you what the link is without actually using it as a link.

Check with your bank. They may have a way for you to access your account directly without the need for Quicken. I used to use Quicken, but now I can just login to my bank accounts without it.

That's the norm here in the U.K. Banks, Building Societies etc., various methods to get in but seem to work O.K. once you are there. I can do more online than I can if I were to visit the bank.

Another reason not to go with a subscription.
I'm still using Quicken 2007.

I am still using Quicken 2015, the last year that was not a subscription. I get notices every so often about upgrading but just ignore them.
See if you can find a copy of Quicken 2015 somewhere and keep on Keepin on.

Got a notice that Quicken is going to cut off my service this month if I don't pay up. I use it to keep my banking information Anyone recommend an alternate to Quicken?

Good discussion. My recent communication from Quicken is that my subscription had automatically renewed and that My credit card had bern charged. The comments here make me think I should just cancel.

All I do is banking. Lack of a subscription would mean I can no longer download transactions from my bank and credit cards to Quicken. That feature is verrrry convenient, and I would lose it

So, pay for it.

sodapop, Whenquicken went to the yearly subscription I quit updating. Then my computer crashed and quicken would no let me load my stand alone verision (2016 i think). I decided rather than making a quick change to something I knew nothing about I would sign up for the year, then check out what my best alternatives are. Good Luck.

You didn’t say what OS you were using. If you use a Mac then a good alternative is Moneydance. Used it for many years & transition from Quicken is fairly easy. My 2 cents.

Your copy of Quicken should continue to work fine for use as a checkbook, analysis of recorded transactions, etc. What they’re requiring the subscription fee for is the online access like automatically downloading transactions from your bank. It you want to use that feature, you’ll have to pay them. As stated above, there are other ways of doing this, but they’re a lot less convenient, which is why Quicken can charge you for that capability.

In that case, I myself, would replace it with something else.
Might be interesting when I have to get a new computer with Win 10...
At that point I'll see if the 2007 version I have works in Win 10.

Gnucash - it is free. May be more difficult but the price is right. We use it for all our monetary tracking.

You should be able to continue using Quicken. You just lose the connected services capabilities. You can still use most if the other features such as making manual entries, comparing your bank statements to your Quicken register, setting up and using categories, and generating reports to name a few.

I had an older version of Quicken that I used before the on-line paranoia hit. It was about much more than a means to balance your checkbook. With just a few steps it would download investment data in detail, not just your latest statement. The data then could be manipulated in many ways to give you % reurns for various periods, net worth, estimate retirement retirement costs and savings needed and more. I haven't used it for several years but now that I have more time I was thinking of buying the newer version and starting over. Glad I read this I am going to try to pursue an alternate program. I strongly dislike subscription software. I want to make a one time purchase and decide if and when I want to update it. Updates other than security ones frequently do not add anything that I want.
And by the way if you hate Quicken stay away from Quickbooks if you have a business. I use it because that is what my accountant uses. The version I have meets my needs but I am constantly bombarded with suggested updates etc everytime I log on that are timconsuming because they have to be removed using several steps before I can do any work. Same ad everytime I open the program. If I could I would change to another program in a second.
I hope more people post alternaive sotware that they like , here

I may be wrong, but this does not sound like it came from Quicken. I would call Quicken support and speak to a representative. 650-250-1900

I have used Quicken 2014 Home & Business since 2014. Like you, I prefer to enter everything manually and then reconcile when I get statements. When I moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10 last year I used PC Mover to move my programs and settings. My Quicken works perfectly on the new PC. I suspect that 2007 will work also. Make sure you have your Quicken QDF backup file on an external device like a thumb drive.
