I watched the movie last summer.
Tom Hanks was a bit old to be a destroyer skipper and LT Commander from the era. They were mostly men in their early-to-mid 30's, not nearly 50. The SFX were not realistic; ships, whether Uboats, destroyers or merchantmen could not maneuver nearly as quickly or deftly as did the animation. The guns, whether the 5" or 3" rifles seemed to have very straight trajectories as did the 40mm Bofors, 20mm cannon, and the .50 cal M-2 It was a very worthwhile story, though.
I guess that's the price paid for more budget-minded flix.
