It is definitely mixed emotions. But I agree with all that has been mentioned, if he can't survive in the wild, a cage is probably better than nothing. Although the cage probably could be a bit larger.

The picture is deceiving, Tony. This was the corner of a triangular cage about 30 feet along the base and 18 feet tall.

Not exactly a fitting home for an Eagle. Hopefully he can be moved to a better home or released.

I agree. As I told Chief, it was Sunday and there was no one around to answer my questions. I am going to follow one of the suggestions below and email the picture to the arboretum and ask about the eagle's status.

That is my issue, Barbara.

Mike, I would bet the Arboretum would love to have this photo if you sent it to them. I’m sure they would share their plans that you can add here. Thank you!

Good idea, Craig! I am going to do that.

I've been to rescue centers before. Is the bird permanently disabled or is it being recuperated for release which is usually the case?

Powerful photo Mike, it sums up my response to captive birds.

It definitely triggered me - heart versus brain, Phil?

That's it exactly Mike. I have done some raptor rehab work, my brain knows the nuances of survival viability...my heart knows these creatures were meant to fly! And so it goes...

Yes Mike, mixed emotions here also, I can definitely see both sides, would hate to have to make the call.

Hopefully, it will be released into the wild, Mike. At the worst a release into a much better enviroment.

The information on their site says that the eagle is "not releasable."

While at the Lasdon Arboretum, I saw an eagle that had been rescued. On the one hand, I was happy that the eagle was safe.

On the other hand, look at the attached.

I hope he is recuperating from an injury and will soon be released back to the wild where he belongs and where he will be free.

I tend to agree with you Barbara
But if the birds are not rescued and taken care of they will be extinct in our life time. The injured birds that cannot be released into the wild can still breed in captivity.
We have the World Bird Sanctuary near St.Louis, they rebab injured birds and care for those that cannot survive on their own, a fantastic place staffed by caring people, They do have much larger cages for the birds once they are healed and or released.
