Removing tint and or color cast...

In a thread posted recently the subject was how to remove color cast.

I had a similar method. It was slightly more complicated. I was vaguely aware of a different method.

I did some research and found a couple of videos that I tried. Three stood out, I will not post a link as they are too verbose for my taste. The common idea was to use curves and levels and more precisely use the options they offer.

As I was trying I discovered that I must have seen the same tutorials before as I had modified both levels and curves default. I completely forgot about it. I did a test to compare both solutions against each other and... They were identical.

I will shortly post a tutorial on this. In the meantime you might want to get familiar with this by searching YouTube for videos. They are instructive, just long.

The Color Balance adjustment tool can easily and quickly correct for a color cast.

PS CC is a pleasure if you want to skin a cat... Many ways to do the same thing, each with their own issues, so the cat can sing a different tune...

Color cast is due to the light source and goes from orange/blue when tint is from green/magenta spectrum. This in turn creates the need for a different process for each.

Color balance is a great tool that allows adjustment per luminosity range. If you want to change the whole image uniformly this is not as clear-cut.

One issue I have observed when I work is that using the probe tool we can find a grey point in every image. This is tedious and quite frankly just as empiric as everything else. I have changed my method using an averaging of an area that should be grey using a selection, killing the color noise first - if any - then do an averaging in order to use levels or curve adjustment auto tool, selecting the best result by modifying the 'auto method'. This is not the best method either, but it satisfies my needs, especially when used with layer styles that allows me then to address any luminosity range and per channel.

The object of post processing is to get the image to resemble what you, not the camera, saw when you tripped the shutter. Image processing is to create a different image than you or the camera saw. Each have their place and only you know what you saw. Changing the image to what you saw can be accomplished in an almost infinite number of ways using a large variety of software. IMHO you should use what works best for you.
