Mosaic

A mosaic is a set of small images or fragments used to create a larger design. A mosaic is an extreme example of composited image w/o the difficulties of creating selections. A mosaic is about color/shade pattern.

What is needed:
► An outline of what the final result will be. This outline needs to be colored, preferably using gradients.
► A number of images related (or not) to the mosaic you want to create.

Process
► Import all images (collection of like subjects or simpler, random images)
► Create an action to:
→ Make each image a smart object
→ Create a group per image
→ Create an image duplicate
→ Create a deep surface blur layer
► Create a selection and a layer of each colored outline area, lock it in place.
► Place averaged images that are a near match in the colored section. (rephrase)
→ Resize, rotate* as needed (reason for the smart object creation)
► Once everything is in place uncheck the average layer visibility in each image group.

Comments
A mosaic is simple in concept but hard to make correctly. Depending on the complexity of your mosaic this can take a long time and experimentation to achieve the final result. Mosaic can be really large (size on disk). Since PS CC has a limitation in disk size (PSD), save as PSB instead. Keeping the mosaic in one file is not a good idea. Creating linked PSB files per area allows for greater flexibility and will not strain your computer as much. Do not merge and rasterize layers until you are sure, you would have to do everything all over again.

First timers
► Select random images 10/20 to import, no more
► Create a simple outline made of regular shapes or a gradient background to learn how to match color shades
► Proceed as above

* Rotation really depends on your vision. If you try to make a portrait made of smaller portraits all need to respect the vertical orientation to keep a 'natural flow' but then again...
