Just ready for full frame if it is worth it (the price).
Is there a D 900 on the horizon?

Nikon has reportedly confirmed that they will release two new DSLRs this year. One is rumored to be a D860 perhaps with 60MP.

Supposedly there will also be two new Z mirrorless cameras...the Z8 and Z9. Nikon has officially confirmed the Z9 but hasn't released any specs yet other than it will use a brand new stacked CMOS sensor.

I am wondering if it would be better to upgrade to a D850 or mirrorless.
Will my current lenses be adaptable to a mirrorless, or is the D850 full frame a better idea.
Thanks.

You own the top tear of Nikon cropped sensor camera's. Unless you want to get into wide angle shots why would you update.
I get excellent 20X30 prints out of my D500 with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6.
At this time I would not get rid of the D500.
And yes, Nikon makes an adapter so you can use those lenses on the Z. If you are going to upgrade at all, I would consider the Z series camera's. But IMHO, they do not focus any faster than your current D500.
If it was me, and it is not, I would wait at least until the next generation of Z's come out.

If you shoot wildlife you might read Steve Perrys website. He has an excellent article on should you upgrade to full frame.

What do you shoot? Mirrorless is the future but the D850 will hold its own well into the future. If you your not serious about fast moving subjects & are willing to eventually upgrade your lens to the Nikon S-line, The Z series will do if your just looking to break into the mirrorless photography.

As I always say, read reviews and comparisons. If the cost of the D850 isn't an issue, and you want it, look for criticisms that will keep you from buying it. I doubt you will find many criticisms of that camera. I prefer cameras with a built-in flash.

I've heard that the D850 is a fantastic camera. However, the D500 is a fantastic camera. I "upgraded" to the D800 when it was the new and great thing. Really, all I needed was a crop sensor camera for my purposes. A D500 would be great. I did use full frame lenses on my original crop camera, getting the sweet spot of the lens and avoiding the distortions of the edge. So, no problem doing that. The question is, do you REALLY need to move up? If so, do it. The 850 is at a good price at this time. But remember, you may need to buy some expensive lenses to make the best use of it.

I also have a D500 and it’s a great camera. A little over a year ago I was about to pull the trigger on a D850 but opted for the Z7 and I’m thrilled with it. The D500 has been pretty much relegated to a wildlife camera and the 200-500mm lives on it. The Z7 is my everything else camera. The Z7II is a nice upgrade from the Z7 but if you don’t need the improvements, (better focus tracking), then you can save money with the older model. Or if you don’t need the 45+ megapixels you can save more with the Z6 or Z6II. The Z7 is more comparable to the D850 though. One caveat, it’s been stated that your FX lenses will work using the FTZ adapter. This is probably true. It will work with AF-S or AF-P lenses but not with older lenses that don’t contain their own focus motors.

D850 and you'll love it.

Despite my view that SLRs are living fossils, I recall a verrrrrrry long thread many months (not years) ago that was basically a love fest for the D850.

Countless users were head over heels about their D850s, and despite the nature of the UHH crowd to butt into every discussion with opposing ideas, the D850 love fest was like a Teflon coated thread. Essentially zero negative remarks butted in. It was a huuuuge long thread, too,

IOW if you’re gonna keep a living fossil as a pet, or as a draft horse, either way it’s gotta be a D850. Leave the other fossils buried in the tar pits.

If you can’t afford an 850 don’t buy an SLR. The 850 is the ONLY reason to NOT move *beyond* SLRs.

——————————————————

The above is about BUYING. No need to defend the various fossils already in use. Current pets are family ... fossils or new breeds, all the loved :-)

I have both D500 and D850.

For some reason (convenience?) I mainly use the D500. (the D850 does not have a strap!!!)

Also, being a high definition the D850 is really finicky. Any camera motion, even small, will be recorded. You need to make sure you are stable to insure tack sharp images.

Other than that? There is very little to add.

That is just BUNK! I have the D500 and the D850 and neither are finicky. Both work equally well with the D850 producing a much larger image file due to it being full-frame AND a 47MP camera.

I have a Z6 and D850. With only my opinions from using them, no scientific testing, I prefer using my F mount lenses on the D850. They seem to focus faster on the D850. As already mentioned, after using the D500 you will feel right at home with the D850.

Somebody mentioned the D500 having better ergonomics. I can't tell the difference between the D500 and D850 without looking at them.

I have also heard, but not confirmed, that lenses like the 70-200E FL lose a step (focusing wise) when mounted to a Z through an FTZ. I have both the 24-70/4Z and the 85/1.8Z of which I am happy with their focus. I have used my 70-200F4 on the Z via the FTZ, but not in any situation when focus speed has been a critical issue. Generally speaking, I feel the made-for-the-format lenses perform better overall but I would still consider myself a Novice with the Z system. Best of luck.

ROTFLMFAO !!!!!

That is dead wrong. You don’t get it. Full frame ? That has no effect on it. You’re shouting “BUNK” from a base of ignorant bunk of your own.

Ron is quite correct about high MP being finicky. Apparently you are just way too sloppy to notice it. I set my 50MP body aside for specific uses while choosing 20MP for routine use.

The 850 is top of the line but also it’s a brick. If you haven’t handled one you should before you buy. Do you want to carry that much weight around? You might want to look at other Nikon full frames.
