For most people...the best tax refund amount is...zero.

We used TurboTax and it worked fine. We got our return deposited today which is about one week from submission. No complaints with that.

Fed not due until 5/17.

I'm glad mine is simple enough that I can do it myself with no tax software. One year mine was a bit more complicated because of the sale of a farm and H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt both told me I had to pay income tax on the full amount of my IRA RMD. I knew that was bs because a portion of it is nontaxable. I went to someone else who filled out only the part that included the sale of the farm and he left form 8606 for me to do. For last year I cashed in a college prepaid tuition plan that was not going to be used and naturally the interest received was income plus I had to pay a 10% penalty on the interest earned causing a tax liability of an extra $1,818. But in the future I will have no income from out of the ordinary sources so filing taxes should remain quite simple.

Yes, letting the Gov. Hold your money for a year is poor financial planning

Jerry, I have used HR Block for years, even before it was HR Block. I did not have any issues with this years version,
Same here. Have been using it when it was Tax Cut. I still have the Tax Cut programs (apps?) on 3½ inch floppies. I have an external floppy drive. Wonder if the program (app?) would still work in Win10. Probably not.

In a former life I was a Tax Accountant.
For personal and family taxes I have happily used the PC version of Turbo Tax for 15 years.

This year I had to use the on-line version (still using Win 7) and it was a complete kludge.
I won't detail all the issues, but I won't use it again.

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for at least six years. Love it! But I have nothing complex to deal with, and no state income tax.

btw, I've been in the first groups to receive the three covid-related stimulus payments each time. It is direct-deposited to the same credit union where I have the tax refund assigned.
I've been using H&R Block since I worked there as a tax preparer for 10 years when living in California and again for 3 years here in Nevada.
Same here - nothing complex and no state income tax.
BTW, I received the latest stimulus payment with my tax refund that was direct deposited.

True, but why wait if the government has a refund for you? I try to manage that our tax return is close to $0, but I had some inherited distributions that were over taxed. Why let the government hold it any longer than necessary?

I use to go to H&R. IMHO, they got to expensive. As I near the end of my mortgage, not enough to deduct so I do the standard EZ. H&R wants $150 for 10 minutes of work. I use Turbo Tax. Even when doing the long form with lots of deductions. Not in circles but it takes a little while. Works great & much cheaper.

I wouldn't know where to begin with paper forms again. I guess the PO has them, but NY requires electronic filing.

I'm with ya on this. I used to do my own when I had a single salary, no investments, didn't own a home, etc. Now in retirement, I have half a dozen accounts, a stock portfolio, a home, multiple incomes, etc. and I would be brain dead by the time I read (and tried to understand) all the hard copy IRS guidance documents and forms. My wife was a book keeper but even she gave it up and we now have an accountant. We pay her a couple hundred dollars but she never fails to get us several thousand dollars in refund. And yes, electronic filing that almost immediately (by government standards) gets our refund deposited as it did with the stimulus checks.

I worked with H&R Block for 41 years. I use TurboTax. I simply liked the ability to establish my own workflow in TT, rather than be led through the H&R process. "To each his own"--said the old lady as she kissed the cow.

I just got my tax returns done and sent in. Yesterday, I paid H&R Block for their software, but it was worthless. It kept running me around in circles, and I got nowhere after a few frustrating hours. I've been using H&R for half a dozen years, but the 2020 version is horrible. Today, I found FreeTaxUSA and I got the Fed and State done, easily, step-by-step.

Fortunately, H&R offers a 60-day money-back guaranty, so I'll see if that's any better than their software.

I know - a lot of you are going to tell me how much you like H&R and how easy it is to use. Good for you!
I just got my tax returns done and sent in. Yeste... (show quote)

Jerry ---

I've never used TurboTax, so cannot comment about it. Some years ago, when I had an income - and needed to file tax returns - I used Tax Act. I found it easy to use, and it produced good results for my simple requirements. I haven't filed for years, so don't know about the current version.

I used TurboTax for years until they stopped making a version for my Mac OS (High Sierra). This year I got H&R and was greatly dismayed by its lousy performance. It was especially poor with the State income tax return and nothing for property tax refund returm.
