Circular polarizers

Between Canon and Tiffen 72mm circular polarizers, is one a better quality than the other? I have both, bought the Tiffen new, and the Canon used in perfect condition years ago. I'm selling one as I don't need both of them. Trying to decide on the one to keep. I don't see any difference between them. They both seem to give good results. Any thoughts?

Do both have brass rings? When you lay them over a white piece of paper, to you see any color cast, any difference? Does one have any unique markings that help to quickly align the polarizer to the direction of the sun? Do they both turn easily? Those would be reasons to consider.

If you have two lenses of that size, you might keep them on those lenses.

Thanks for your reply. I don't see brass on either one. When on white paper the Canon is a little bluer and lighter shade than the Tiffen. The Canon has white dots evenly spaced on edge, don't know if that's alignment markings, and if it is, how to use it. They both turn smoothly.

The Canon is not as thin as the Tiffen if that makes a difference, but not to me, except makes it a little easier to feel.

I see at B&H Canon polarizers are quite a bit more than Tiffen. Is that because of the name or quality of the glass?

Thanks for your reply. I have only one 72mm lens, and I don't always have the polarizer mounted. I'm not a pro but I shoot a lot with my Canon 80D. I had 6 lenses but only used my Canon 18-200mm. I got tired of switching lenses. I sold all the other lenses because now I want to get the Tamron 18-400mm, then I'll sell my 18-200.

Really, no one is going to beat down your door for a $30 Tiffen CPL, when sold new. The Canon probably has the brand name for some of the price. But, the used market isn't going to come running there, either. The shipping cost will be half if not a higher percentage of the low price used-price needed to generate interest. It might be cheaper to just put one in a drawer and forget about. Or, toss the Tiffen into the box as a Lucky Strike Extra for anyone who buys a lens from you.

if they are quite old, they are identical, both Tiffen.

Thanks, your right. Actually I was thinking of including one of them with my Canon 18-200mm when I sell it after buying the Tamron 18-400mm to help sell it. I should have mentioned that in my question. I'll probably keep the Canon polarizer.

Weird, Tiffen says made in USA, Canon says made in Japan. I bought the Tiffen from B&H 5 or 6 years ago and the Canon was used from eBay, so no idea how old it is. It was and is in mint condition. I bought it for a back-up but used it most of the time while on our trips. I've had it for at least 4 years. Maybe the Canon one is really old.

You're thinking of those old merry-go-rounds.

I have used Nikon cameras and lenses for more than 55 years. Except for a 77 mm Nikon polarizer all the polarizers I use on my lenses are old polarizers of the film era. I hardly use the Nikon polarizer.
I have several Tiffen polarizer filters and they do very well. Some Hoyas I have do very well either and they are not circular.

Paul you’re showing your wisdom.
