There is a ton of good advice above this. I just want to respond to the question that the subject line suggested which may be a bit different than your full question.

I have found that on my two Sony cameras using any of the automation provided by the camera can be more exact for exposure than a manual setting. My cameras allow a 1/3 stop increment or decrement of manual exposure but I've been able to see, in testing, that the camera can make smaller changes in exposure when it can control, for example, shutter or aperture, perhaps ISO as well.

Interestingly, the EXIF doesn't reveal this. In other words, in controlled testing I have been able to see different raw values with the same EXIF reported shutter, aperture, ISO. I can see these differences without RawDigger but RawDigger confirms what I am seeing. The difference is small but visible to me.

So my answer to the question I thought you were asking is "yes" it can be a little more accurate. That said, the difference of less than 1/3 stop is usually not worth fussing about. So, FYIO.

Such a one-sided, opinionated, holier-than-thou, thought.
But that's just MY opinion.

Mine too....😊

I shoot mostly in manual with auto iso capped at 1600 for my d500. That being said if a person does not use all the tools in the box he is cheating himself. What works for one may not for another. I cut gemstones. Polishing gems once cut is a perfect example of no one thing is correct. There are so many ways to accomplish the same goal and my polishing method does not work for some. Photography is the same. What works for you is important. The most important is to be able to use all the tools in the box.

Well, I'm cheating myself.
Just because certain tools are available, I don't necessarily need use them.
I only use what I need to use.

You're absolutely right: "What works for one may not for another.".

You miss the last line of my post. Lol. The most important is to be able to use all the tools in the box. Doesn't say you have to but if you don't know how you don't have much chance of knowing which tool to use. Yes as stated what works for one may produce unsatisfying results for another. Lol

No, I didn't miss it.
This line had more impact for me: "That being said if a person does not use all the tools in the box he is cheating himself.". My inference was that I should be using all the tools in the toolbox.
Why is it most important to use all the tools in the toolbox? (Your last line.)
Maybe for you, but not for me.

The last line states " The most important thing is to be able to use all the tools in the toolbox." Apparently you missed the be able to use them. Lol. Can you? If not how do you know the tools you use are the best way for you? I believe ABLE TO USE THEM is the part you have missed.

If they do that, you know they are not very good photographers!
There are times and situations for both auto and manual.

Yes, I did miss that explicitly.

Kinda a given though.
Everyone has the ability to use all of the options in any software package because they are there in the package.
I am ABLE to use ALL the options, services, functions in ALL of my software, including EXCEL, WORD, KOMODO, etc., but it is not necessary, nor do I do so. Excel has a bazillion things I do not use, but am able.

Well, at least a photographer with a special mind set.

I knew you could use all the tools in your camera. I have read your post replies and viewed your photos for a minute or two. Lol. Minute meaning quite some time in this context. I guess I did not qualify the ability to use the tools well or on a high level. Lol. I also race sports cars and a professional driver I know can use my tool or my car about 8 tenths of a second better than me. So I obviously can use the tool but not to it's highest level. So I must restate my last sentence. What is most important is to be able to use all the tools in the toolbox with a good amount of understanding and proficiency. I have to say out of all the verbal fencing and other posts in this thread I enjoy Chg Cannons the best. Lol.

Now a race car I do NOT have the ability to use.
(I wonder if Daytona still lets people drive their own cars on the track during off times.)

Yup, I enjoy Chg Cannon's quips a lot also!

Have a great evening, what's left of it.
