We are thinking about combining a leaf look in the fall with a trip to Yellowstone. Does anyone have recommendations for a good photographic tour company in Yellowstone?

Thanks!

I have been there, Mike. We did not take a tour, though. You might not need to. I would do some research to see what is available and decide from there.

You really don't need to pay a tour guide...just watch for the people jams....then you know there are critters around And for landscapes....every direction you look you will be taking pictures of!!

But I do know that Trent Sizemore gives photography workshops in Yellowstone all year long. Here is a link to his site:

Mike, I don't know about guided tours but I used Gypsyguide on my last trip and it was terrific...and CHEAP. It plays through your radio and is knowledgeable and entertaining. Check it out.

UTMike,

All you really need is a map of the two parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton and perhaps a little help from Google. Yellowstone is basically laid out in a figure 8 and you just need to drive and stop along the way. Wildlife sightings are normally found by driving slowly and observing, or by stopping where the cars are. There are five entrances ⎯ North Entrance, Northeast Entrance, South Entrance, East Entrance and West Entrance. The southern entrance connects to the Grand Tetons. If you are coming from the south, do the Tetons first and then drive to and through Yellowstone. When driving Lamar Valley drive all the way to Cooke City, there is always something to see and photograph, as well as a good place to get something to eat. If you are there in the fall, you may encounter Elk bugling in Mammoth Hot Springs.

The issue is lodging, as you either stay in one place and drive for long days, or stay in one area for a few days then move, reservations are required, book early. If you have an RV, then you have to find campgrounds within the park, which may be hard to book as well. Best of luck, Gary

Anyway the highlights may include (look these up on downloadable park maps):

Chapel of the Transfiguration
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Grand Prismatic Spring & Midway Geyser Basin
Jenny Lake
Lamar Valley
Hayden Valley
Mammoth Hot Springs
Menors Ferry
Moose Wilson Road
Mormon Row
Norris Geyser Basin
Old Faithful & Upper Geyser Basin
Signal Mountain
West Thumb Geyser Basin of Lake Yellowstone

Perhaps skip the canned tour and the crowds.
Go on your own, explore the areas not crowded, and get shots totally unique from the billions of me too shots.
Just a thought from someone who does that on every trip.
Been to many countries that tourists go to. Doubt I have a single shot of the Eiffel Tower or other tourist traps but many unique photos of places and people tours and tourists NEVER see that are amazing.

Realize that "fall" comes early. Lots of things (the lodges, restaurants) in the parks and north of the parks start to close up towards the end of September, when you may get snow. The elk start migrating down into the Jackson Hole area then, and you can catch them swimming across the river - it is pretty awesome.

I took a photo tour when I was there. We rode in one of the antique Yellowstone buses and toured the park. The bus alone was so photogenic! I booked it through the hotel’s concierge.

I concur with other posts that you can do YNP on you own. My wife and I spent 9 days in the park a few years ago. We rented an RV in Bozeman and drove to Gardner, MT and used an RV park there for about half the nights. We also reserved a spot in the park for the other nights. We also took our Outback and toured during the day in the Outback so we didn't have to drive the RV everywhere.

This was in September and we made camp site reservation in May that year. Reservations will probably be your biggest challenge. We were there mid-month and it was a week early for fall color. We did have temperatures in the 80s on some days and several nights with light snow fall, so go prepared for rapid changes in temp. Get a good guide book or use Google and map out a strategy for driving. It is an amazing place to visit.

Maybe take a tour, but spend an extra day or two to spend more time at the spots you want to go back to. I can guarantee there will be many of those. If you do take a tour you might seriously consider a photo workshop.

UTMike, we went to Yellowstone several years ago. I knew it was BIG, although not that BIG. Many of the famous sites were 10, 20 or more miles from each other....and it different directions. It was quite breathtaking although a lot of time was spent behind the wheel.

If I were to do it again I would get a map of the park and plan my day....which of course, I'm a guy...so I did not.

The difference between no guide and a guide is that, given that the person is reputable, the guide will scope out current animal behavior and sightings, will talk with other Yellowstone guides and read the Yellowstone web sites, and will determine sunrise and sunset and the best locations for each, additionally they generally know where to get a good breakfast or lunch or will sometimes even bring lunch, and, usually, they will drive, know the roads, and often have a very good eye for sighting animals. And, a guide can drop the photographer off at the bear jam when there is no parking and then pick them up when the experience is over. No guide means the photographer must do all the work and preparation to find the animals and get good shots, other than simply looking for bear jams. I've been to Yellowstone several times, spring and fall, and always with a guide and always got some nice shots of a variety of animals. Check out websites and be sure that person is permitted to lead photo tours inside the park.
