I found this fly and believe it to be a Yellow Dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria - please correct me if I am wrong.

Nice pic, good call. Dung Flies, family Scathophagidae in the great Housefly Suborder, genus Scathophaga is a very good guess, but there are several species that are very similar. Yours looks a little green (perhaps it was breakfast?). The Golden Dung Fly is common, Scathophaga stercoraria, it is the subject of many ecological and evolutionary studies. For years I have called this family Scatophagidea (lost the 'h'), the "scat-eaters", don't know if it was just my goof or if I picked it up elsewhere, but it does occur in several ID books as well; one paper uses them interchangeably! Yet, only a few live in dung as larvae or visit as adult, as the golden one does.

Thank you Relbugman for your always valued input. I have done some reading and learned a little of their relationship with dung but I will do further reading to fix it all in my ageing head. I hope you are well and surviving this difficult time with the virus etc. We are fine, being older we are well passed the attraction of crowded places.

Looks good! And a nice set of pictures. A handsome fly, despite its name.

Brenda, Good multi-angle shots of a Dung Fly and good naming of a fly [Scathophaga stercoraria] that likes flowers. Are they know for gaining nourishment from dung. Cattle utilize food poorly and so the dung contains partially digested food for others [so I recall?].

I have never seen UHH photos of Dung Beetles who collect dung in balls that will contain eggs and feed the young [?]. I recall them from my grandfather's farm.

Indeed, Brenda did the Romans know that they would be remembered for naming everything? Easter is noted for "rising from the dead"... I would be pleased to know that Latin will not rise again.

An un-fond memory: Having gotten a D- in the then required High-School Latin... passing but flunking, passing to prevent me from taking the course again... the bearded instructor, Ms. Berdan, hated me as much as I hated Latin. I think her mummified remains [mumia-Berdania] are on display at the high-school honored like Vladimir Lenin. To me, Pox Romana was indeed a Pox.

Brenda, I always look forward to you being out and about with your camera in hand. The images of your fly are very well taken, crisp and sharp down to each of its hairs and spikes. Job very well done.
