Old stationary bailer in the Nebraska sandhills

This is an old stationary bailer wasting away in the western Nebraska sandhills. Taken 17 years ago using TMax 100 film in 4x5 camera, then the negs were scanned. The bailer was belt driven by a tractor of some type, and the hay was brought to the bailer.

Thanks John. I took this while spending a week at the rancher's place helping him put up hay. He normally used horses to do that but got behind and had to use his old (very old) tractors instead.

After watching a couple of UTube videos, I found that the wires are simply manually inserted from the side, no needles or anything.

A few years ago I also posted a horse drawn and horse powered bailer I found somewhere in Wyoming.

Great find and shots Jack, B&W is the perfect medium. I stacked bales part of one summer 50+ years ago. Hemp twine was much easier on the fingers than wire.

Hahaha. I was raised on a Kansas farm where we bailed alfalfa 2-4 times each year, always in the summer heat. That's why I took up microbiology and worked in a lab for the next 40+ years.
