Digitizing 35mm Film at Home

Because my Coolscan is on borrowed time I decided to look at an alternative approach.  It was an interesting exercise and I discovered a few things along the way.

It is technically possible to match the performance of the Coolscan using a high resolution full frame camera.  It can even be a quicker process and it yields a raw image rather than the JPEG or TIFF file that comes from the scanner.

I also learned that the A7 II monochrome (24MP) actually produces a sharper image than the Z7 (45.4MP).  Imagine what I could do with a modified A7r.

It also leaves me with a fairly simple way forward.

It's easier to use the A7 II for B&W than to continue to use B&W film and convert it to digital.  It's also a simple matter to use a full frame digital camera rather than to continue to use 35mm color film.

But medium format is a whole different issue.  Scanned film still seems to be the way to go.

Details in the attached PDF.
