Bald Eagles - Coming Back

Bald eagles have increased dramatically in number over the past few years. They were on the endangered species list, but now they number over 300,000. We see them by our local reservoirs.

I can remember when getting an eagle was an annual. Now, finding the first one is the quest. Great to see them no matter where.

Jerry,
When I lived up in the Catskills, there was this nest of Eagles at Roundout Reservoir where I watched and photographed a young eagle grow up and learn to fly, wonderful view...
Here is the location of the nest @ 41.853171, -74.513513, Grahamsville...

They are still there and also at the Ashokan Reservoir.

Thanks for the location. I'll see if I can find it.

I live on a tributary to the Merrimack river where several are now nesting. Last summer an adult male flew up the river to my house, circled and flew back downstream. Absolutely amazing to see this while sitting on my deck, about 75 feet away.

Absolutely impossible to see this 25 years ago when they were on the endangered list. It shows you that just as with whales, we humans can, on very rare occasions, do something good for nature.

In Minnesota eagles are at the point of overpopulation. I have them every day flying over our egg farm looking for dinner. Our chickens are so used to them they post sentries to alarm their peers. At one point Minnesota was second only to Alaska for number of eagles. In fact, the National Eagle Center is located in Wabasha, MN.

A few miles down the road from me there are a few cattle ranches. Every year the cows give birth which attracts the eagles that feed on the placentas. Hoards of photographers head to the area to take pictures. The ranchers are more than happy to let the photogs on their property to take their photos - for a fee, of course.
That reminds me, that should be coming up soon.

My son and I did the weekly bald eagle count for the National Eagle Center in Wabasha Minnesota on one day this past winter. At Lock and Dam 5 at Bass Camp we counted 189 eagles either riding the currents or sitting in trees. What a comeback
