WARNING!! I purchased a Canon large tank printer for my wife about 4 years ago via Amazon and purchased the extended warranty. All ink jet printers use ink even when not printing to keep the nozzles from pugging. That ink goes into an ink pad inside the printer. The pad filled up after 3 years (original ink bottles) and the printer stopped working. We called Canon and they said the printer could not be fixed in spite of the youtube video showing folks could do it. There is software in the printer that prohibits the user from changing the pad and it locks the printer.

I was able to get a refund from the warranty company and purchased an Epson. Before that I checked the Epson website and new ink pads are available from Amazon for $20.

Before you buy a Canon tank printer, check to see if the ink pad can be replaced. If not, buy Epson.

Oh no! That’s awful! I’ve never had that happen to me; but I did see that problem in some of the reviews that I read about the ink tank printers. Probably a call to each company would be wise to be sure that the one I purchase has replaceable ink pads. That’s one reason I rarely print borderless photos. I also read that Epson ink jets clog a lot. I hate that the new cartridges are no longer clear so you can’t tell if the cart is truly empty when you replace it. You can get off-brand ink in clear cartridges, but I never use generic ink. The tanks would save a lot of money and they’re clear.

canon is my best, had both. IF YOU DO A LOT OF PRINTING. ALL printers run a full color sheet ever other day keeps the jets clean.

I have never had a printer that runs a full color sheet every other day. That seems quite a waste of ink. Do you manually print a color sheet every other day?

I have the Epson and have run 5+ reams of paper and 200+ 4x6 color photo and still on the same ink it came with. I will never go back to a cartridge again. The only problem I had was when I used Canon photo paper through the colors world start to fade after a month or two but when I use Epson photo paper no fading so far after three years

Thank you for that. I have a lot of Canon photo paper because I’ve mostly used Canon printers in the past. I would buy a pack of Epson photo paper if I bought an Epson printer for the occasional photo I may print. I also have Red River paper. Have you tried that in your Epson? Also, have you had to change the ink pad yet? Assuming that you can! I’m asking because your printer is 3 years old and that seems to be the time that it takes for the ink pad to fill up.

It is a "photo" printer with several tanks. If photo printing is less important than document printing, it would indeed be a waste of money.

I currently use a Canon Pro-10 for pictures, but if/when it bites the dust, then a 6 tank printer would be a good replacement. The cost savings in ink should offset the higher price of this printer. If you ever purchase this, I would love to hear how you like it. We would just have to figure out the comparable sizes from inches to centimeters and whatever size A3+ etc would be!

I am considering purchasing a Canon or an Epson printer with ink tanks instead of cartridges. I am not really interested in other brands. Two that I am considering are the Epson ET-2760 ($300) or the Canon PIXMA 6020 ($269). I'm leaning towards the Canon. I've only owned one Epson, years ago and didn't like it. I will use it mostly for office and school documents, scanning documents and photos and the occasional printing of a 4 x 6 picture. I like the idea of refillable tanks to save on the cost of ink. The Canon uses pigment ink for black whereas the Epson uses all dye-based ink. It has to be compatible with Apple computers, iPads and iPhones and also with Android phones. I need double-sided print ability and wireless. I did a search on this site but found nothing recent.

I am open to suggestions and would love to hear from anyone who owns either of these printers.

Have been using the Epson et4750 for about 4yrs and have yet to purchase new ink. It did come with extra set of ink bottles (unbelievable) and I do a ton of printing. Has worked flawlessly. Ink tanks, it's the future, a no brainer.

I have the Canon 6020 and like it very much. It is quiet, reliable and easy to set up. It does a really good job printing photos considering it used three colors plus black. Ink is very inexpensive.

That's interesting because I have an Epson printer that has locked up because the waste tank is full and can't be replaced because the carriage that holds the ink cartridges can't be moved to gain access to the waste tank.

I believe that is because canon uses dye inks which don’t last long and Epson uses pigment which can last along time, past 100yrs

I have two Canon printers. The pro1000 is very good, however cartridges run Bn over $50 each and it has 8. The picks does a good job, but not quite as good as the 1000. BTW Can says the large printers are supposed to be used every day!!

Good that Epson has quit the diaper scam. Not terribly long ago a friend had to junk an Epson from the days when the pad was not a disposable user-supply item.

Perhaps Canon will learn ?
