Sony Mavica MVC-FD85

I was cleaning out a closet recently and came across this relic. My employer was getting rid of it, and I grabbed it up. I don't recall ever using it, other than just to see if it still worked. The battery won't hold a charge now, but it can be used with the adapter/charger cord.

On August 25th 1981, Sony unveiled a prototype of the Sony Mavica as the world's first electronic still camera. As with all Mavica cameras until the early 1990s (including later models sold commercially) this first model was not digital. (Wikipedia)

In 2000, Sony released the MVC-FD85 digital camera. What made this camera interesting is that, like other Mavica models, it utilized a floppy disk for image storage. There was an optional adapter which accepted Memory Stick cards inside of a dummy floppy disk as well. (Wikipedia)

Cool! I had one. Bought the memory stick in the "floppy" adapter which worked great.
Long gone though.

I still have a functional FD 92 with four working batteries. I get it out about once a year to take a few 1.2 mp snaps.

I thought I had one but sure it was only 0.3mp? Floppy disc, worked well. Later a camera with sd card, only 128mb but it was 1.3mp and so much better the sony which I thought wonderful was an expensive joke.

That camera is probably the main reason I would not use a digital camera and why I wont buy Sony products again. Kodak was probably running a close second and it was the Pixpro if I remember, correctly

I'm guessing there was something about the Sony camera that you didn't like.

I had one of their models. Can’t remember the model #. But it only used a 3 1/5” floppy disk.I got it at half price on sale on New Year’s Day. iIt was a floor model. It was $200.00. A fun camera to use. But you couldn’t print anything bigger than a 2 x 3” photo. Otherwise it looked like a bunch of dots.

One of these was my first digital camera. I had to go with it because of the floppy disk as my computer at the time didn't have a USB port. Now I'm loaded with USBs but no Floppy drive. Times change.

Sony Mavica part of the evil that destroyed Kodak the first to have invented the digital camera... a VP killed it saying "We Make Film." Film was their Titanic they stayed afloat as long as they could with it! "Sony Mavica as the world's first electronic still camera." No, but yes if you add the word commercially sold. "Steven Sasson invented the world’s first digital camera while working at Eastman Kodak in 1975."

PS: I in my save everything including dust... in there is a plug in USA external 3.5" disk reader. I recall my lady friend showing me her new floppy drive it was what 8" she was a CPA and that drive was big money back then.

8-inch (20 cm) format in 1972. The more conveniently sized 5 1⁄4-inch (13 cm) disks were introduced in 1976, and became almost universal on dedicated word processing systems and personal computers.[2] This format was more slowly replaced by the 3 1⁄2-inch (9 cm) format, first introduced in 1982

I had one of the Mavica models. Mine used a half-sized re-writable CD and had no view finder, just the LCD panel on the back. In any bright light it was very difficult to see the image to frame the photo. I took it to Iraq in 2004 with the intent of documenting my tour and killing the camera. We both survived. I found it to be a clumsy camera to handle and was quite happy to retire it when a friend gifted me his well used Canon 10D. I still have the Mavica somewhere...

Our church bought one and we used it on our Spring Break Mexico Mission Trips. We built homes for poor families. I took all the pictures and posted them daily to our web-site, so the parents of the kids could see what we have been doing and what we have accomplished. It was very popular with the church members and also with many people worldwide after they located our website. The camera served us for number of years.

Ah, the memories. I had one and thought it was fantastic. No more buying film or developing, you could see your images quickly and easy to carry. Actually still have some of those old images. Not sure if I still have the camera or not. will have to check storage.
