Amazon Adapter Follies

This past couple of weeks I ordered a cheap Fotosay Leica R to Nikon Z mount adapter from Amazon.
It was a few cents over $16.00 w/ tax. I received it in the exact amount of time they said for it to be
delivered. The small white box that it came in was correctly labeled. When I opened the box it had a
Exacta to Nikon Z mount adapter inside. I informed Amazon and they gave me the locations of some
Amazon depots in my area. I returned it with the request that they send a replacement. I got another
back to me in two days. When I opened the correctly identified box lo and behold it had another Exacta
to Nikon Z mount adapter!. When I informed them this time they said that my bank card would be credited.
I would like to state that at this point in time I do not have a Z mount camera. The reason for the purchase
was to see how securely the R mount lenses would fit. $16 isn't exactly a high risk investment. Apparently
they were mispackaged at the factory in China. The folks at Amazon are order pullers. They just read what's
on the box and go from there. I am not angry about this just a bit amused. There are other makes of adapters
as there are sources to buy from. I considered ordering an Exacta mount to Z mount adapter hoping to find a Leica R mount adapter. I hope this post has garnered a few chuckles.

Since you bought it to see how securely the R mount lenses would fit, can we infer that you are not concerned about how securely the Z mount may fit?

They sometimes have issues with what is actually in the package. I've had several similar episodes...great thing about them, they take care of it, free return, fast refund or repl...several replacements/refunds have come well before I sent the "bad" item back no complaints.

On Amazon and adapters: I recently tried all of their adapter cheapies for Canon lens to Sony E-mount (mirrorless), these were all the full automation types. All worked fairly well, but the only one I kept that worked the best, and mounted solid was a $19.99 MOVO brand, it fit the cameras and lenses well, and worked as advertised, better than the others that cost up to $120. As I said, full automation, iris control. auto-focus as fast or faster than the rest.....I ended up sending the others back and bought a second MOVO for my other Sony body and Canon lens combo. I can see no reason to spend several hundred dollars for one of the top brands...weeks of use now and no issues, even with 70-300 IS USM/EF-S 55-250 IS... I call it win win!!

Of course. However, I would not find that out until I tried it on a Z body. Thanks for
pointing out my over site.

You can infer whatever you see fit. Matters not in the least.

Did you try to mount the lens? Maybe the box was labeled correctly and the adapter was labeled incorrectly.

My goto for adapters is K&F Concepts.

Trust me. The adapter was definitely for Exakta mount lenses. I once worked for twenty one years
for a big city school district that had its own media services. I was with their photo services. The chief
photographer from the greatest generation era loved Exaktas. He tried to keep them going until it
was no longer feasible. Actually some of those lenses were pretty good optically.

Well, you did better than some Amazon shoppers.

A few years ago someone ordered a Canon 5D (I forget which version) and got a Canon box full of 2x4 scraps. To my knowledge, Canon isn't making a camera out of pine, so am guessing someone ordered a 5D Mark Something, received it and replaced the camera with the scraps of wood, then returned it for a refund.... Of course then Amazon put it back on the shelf without looking inside the box. Perhaps another even more likely possibility was that some Amazon employee is enjoying the free DSLR they got from the warehouse when no one was looking.

More recently I saw someone got a brick in their Amazon package, instead of what they ordered (don't recall what they had ordered, just that it wasn't a brick).

At least you got an actual lens-to-camera adapter, even if it wasn't the correct one!

Same thing happened to me with Amazon. I got a refund and purchased the item on the Fotodiox website. I've been happy with all their adapters.

I heard a similar story on a YouTube channel. The one with the bald heavy set tattooed guy.
This sounds like your basic E Caveat Emptor to me. Large ticket items should be ordered from legitimate photo equipment dealers. To be on the safe side, perhaps.

That shows good sense. Knowing what I know, I would be verrrry concerned with how the exacta side of the adapter fits.

That right ... I would have almost zero concern about the Z side of the adapter.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

But also, knowing what I know, I would never use the very cheapest adapter to assess the exacta fit. I’d order a much better adapter from a very much better source (you know who) to find out if a trustworthy exacta fit actually exists.

If $60 to $100 doesn’t buy a decent fit, then I’d return the adapter knowing that adapting exacta to Z is not a viable plan. Acoarst if it is viable, then I just keep the adapter for its intended future use.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I just got my Z, for adapting to Leica mount lenses. (The Z has a very thin filter pack same as Leica.) To choose an adapter I didn’t bother to plot the price vs quality curves to find out where they cross. I went directly for the Metabones.

Fortunately for me, I’ve never seen any exacta mount lenses, in great condition, offered at tempting prices ;-)
