Computer "Repaired"

I mentioned yesterday that I was bringing my computer to be repaired after several months of just sitting. The problem was it would not recognize the HDMI input so it wouldn't start. Someone reminded me about the shop I had used in the past, and he was open now.

Embarrassingly simple problem: "schmutz" on the contacts of a 16GB memory stick. So, I had a half hour drive there, a half hour for him to find and repair the problem, and a half hour drive home. Now it's back to normal, for just $45.

I had heard about memory sticks causing all sorts of odd problems, and I experienced that first hand. How could a memory stick prevent the computer from detecting the monitor? Odd.

I've never had a problem with memory sticks.
(I don't leave them in the computer either.)
Glad it was so simple!

This is my first memory problem (computer, that is ). In the future, I'll be sure to check the contacts on the memory sticks.

The easiest way to "clean" RAM cards is to fully insert them, then remove them 5-6 times. This will refresh the contact surfaces on the RAM slot as well as the RAM itself.

The contact wipers are self cleaning (and gold so they don't tarnish),
except for peanut butter, bacon grease, and some other things.

Reminds me of a time that I removed a tire, broke it down to get the inner tube out to repair a leak. After inflating and mixing up some soapy water, it was determined that the leak was a loose valve stem insert.
Lesson learned and - it won't happen again...hopefully.

My boss asked me to install a new hardrive. Did so, but computer would not turn on. Thought I'd forgotten to plug it in, but no, drive dead shorted the entire computer, no lights nothing. Luckily no damage. Considering how versitel USB ports are, monitors can be plugged in there also, probably sent a bad command or shorted something out.

If it was "shmutz," it must have been a Yiddish memory "shtick."

I have had hard drives and optical drives with shorts that cause a no start situation. That is why if you have a no start or no boot situation it pays to unplug everything down to the minimum and try again adding devices until it won't boot again.
Also had similar issues with faulty memory sticks where a monitor or other odd devices don't work. A reseat of the memory sticks works wonders. Best to remove all sticks (noting positions) and give the stick contacts a wipe with isopropyl and reinsert with it still wet. Then remove it again and wait until dry before final insertion. If it still plays up swap the memory sticks around to see if the symptoms remain the same.

I work on pcs and sometimes the oddest problems are fixed by "cleaning the RAM". I have lost count of how many computers I have brought back to life by simply reseating the MEMORY sticks. I assume all brands have same issue, I work on HP and Dells and it is about equal for this type of problem.
