using the rear screen to aid focus

I am currently using a Canon 90d dslr camera. I watched a video buy a landscape photographer showing how he used the rear screen to insure perfect focus. He would magnify the image on his rear screen and set his focus and then recompose the image keeping his focus setting and taking the image. He was able to insure his focus was perfect. I am not able to magnify my image prior to taking my photo with my canon 90d. What am I doing wrong?

I don't own a Canon camera but I was looking at an image of the back of the 90D. In the upper right corner there are 2 buttons -- a"-" and a "+". While in live view, have you tried pressing the "+" button? That works for me on a Nikon D750.

Regards,

Dennis

I tried it and I do not have a + or _ selection option on my canon 90d. I suspect my camera does not have that option. Thanks for your reply!!!!!

Sorry Mike. I saw this image of the back of a 90D and thought it might help.

Go to pages 147-148 in your manual and it explains how to zoom in while using live view.

You can usually find someone here who knows how to read a manual.

You are correct. The problem is the manual has 900 pages and you can never find what you want there. But it is the old saying RTFM. Thanks for the help, I am glad some one reads the manuals!!!!

Consider downloading the PDF version of the manual and using text-search to speed the process of finding the useful sections for specific questions.

For the Live View and focusing, if using back-button focus, first set the position of the AF point in Live View. Then, zoom the display. Finally, hold the BBF until the focus is confirmed at that single AF point. I get much better results for landscape shots via this process.

It sounds like A good technique, I can't wait to try it. Using BBF and magnified live view the focus should be locked in as long as you do not us BBF again. You should be able to recompose and maintain the original focus.

Yes, you can recompose. Personally, I believe in always focusing specifically at the point that is intended to the subject and the sharply focused point within the image. You can easily more the AF point around within the LiveView frame and then focus at that point. It would see unnecessary and counter productive to focus someplace else in LV and then recompose.

The reason to recompose would be to perfect the focus for specific part of a landscape. It guaranties perfect focus for a specific part of the image.

To 'perfect' the focus on somewhere in the image, place a single high precision AF point to that point in the image and let the camera obtain focus at that point. No other approach is better.
