I'm trying to get to most bang for my buck so to speak. I need a 100 mm macro lens for my Eos Rebel xs, but I don't have $1000 to spend. Has anyone had any luck with aftermarket lenses, Tokina Sigma ect...?

I have the Tokina 100mm lens and it's really really good. Read the reviews and I think you might be persuaded.

Macro lenses in the 100mm range don't cost a lot for high image quality. I think you would be happy with any Tokina, Sigma, Tamron. Might be 90mm. KEH has a "bargan" grade Canon 100 2.8 macro for $299. A new Tokina is less than $500, a new Tamron, $450.

I have the non-L Canon 100mm F/2.8 and am very very happy with it. It is a quality lens, very sharp, good colour. Just doesn't have the weather sealing of an L.

Several Canon macro-photographers use Canon, Sigma, or Tamron macro lenses.

The Tamron 2.5/90 MF is hard to beat. No longer in production but many on eBay for $100-200. It goes to 1:2, or 1:1 with dedicated extension tube.

These lenses don't have to cost a grand if they don't have IS! If you'll be shooting with a tripod or copy stand, maybe yo don't need IS. I use the Sigma 150mm macro and like it! Remember the f/stops here!

Not exactly what you're asking, but I got a really nice Nikon 105mm from eBay, way below the price of a new one.
