Slow booting computer

Sometimes my computer will boot very slowly. I do have a USB hub with a thumb drive in it most of the time. If I shut it down and reboot without the USB stick it works ok. Can a bad thumb drive cause this? The same thing happens with the USB drive in the computer slot also. I have never seen this. I can still get to the files if I install the thumb drive after reboot.
Thanks

Most computers today can boot from a thumb drive, in the boot process the bios searches each possible boot device until it finds one that works. In your setup you can chose the order of boot devices, set your 1st device as the HDD, this may help.

What system and how old. Could be your hard drive is getting full and needs to be optimized and/or you don't have enough memory installed for what you're running. Pretty common issue with older windows machines.

Open task manager and go to start programs. In the list disable anything you don't want or need to run at startup. It will not give you any options that can keep you from booting. Also letmedance is correct in his or hers statement. I screwed up and set my external drive as bootable. Now I can't boot with it plugged in. I'm sure I can fix it. Just haven't researched.

Correct. During boot, it’s apparently looking for Windows in the USB drive, and when it doesn’t find it, then finally going to the HD drive. Go into the BIOS (typically you’ll hold down the Del key in the boot process when prompted by the splash screen), go into the boot sub menu, and make sure that the HD is first in the sequence.
