If you have to pay to store your pictures why not buy a hard drive and store them in that, I store my photographs on four separate hard drives

Because major cloud providers are MUCH more reliable than a single hard drive that can/will ultimately die. They keep multiple copies of your data at geographically different sites (no mitigate local disasters) in professionally managed, hardened data centers with redundant power, storage and networking. In the professional/commercial data center world, reliability/availability is often expressed in β€œ9s”. Your inexpensive HD is maybe 2-3 9s (99-99.9% uptime/availability). A good quality enterprise RAID or NAS might be 4-5 nines (99.99-99.999% uptime), and a good quality enterprise cloud data center might be 6-7 nines (99.9999-99.99999% uptime). We can debate the actual numbers per provider and storage, but you get the idea... it’s orders of magnitude more reliable.

In addition to what Trix said, and my many interactions with him I trust he is in the same or similar industry as I am:

A simple but effective backup strategy is as simple as having one local copy and one offsite copy. My math might be a little off, but managing two copies is much easier than managing four copies. And that offsite backup is far more reliable than most home users can achieve.

I would use Microsoft Office anyway so the 1TB storage per user (6 per household) is effectively free. Also it gives me an offsite copy almost immediately rather than at some later date when i can move a disc offsite. Also not easy for me to find a secure place to store offsite. And lastly the cloud backup means when i get trapped away from home in a foreign country due to COVID lockdown i can still get access.

Yes, I’ve just been lazy. There hasn’t been much of a market for high-end loudspeakers and tube type amps this last year. i’ll shoot you a PM when it’s up.
