Does anybody have the issue I have that when my monitor (27" 2560x1440 144hz) is set to a very high resolution the type in the panels becomes very tiny and hard to see?

Oh yeah, I sometimes get nose prints on the monitor screen trying to read the type. Not being a computer guru I don't know for sure but I would think that would be the responsibility of the software companies? Or maybe I just need a shorter nose

I am currently using an HP 27" monitor 1920x1080 60hz. Works fine so far as I am concerned.
Local photo club is of the opinion I need a monitor which can display 27" 2560x1440 144hz monitor.

I thought my photo looked good on my current monitor. Can someone who uses the higher resolution
monitor chime in and tell me is it going to be better for photo editing? I would hate to drop $500 and be
disappointed.

I use my computer for photo editing and general use. I am NOT a gamer and will never be.

Thanks
I am currently using an HP 27" monitor 1920x1... (show quote)

No, I don't think you need a new monitor. Yours has sufficient "HD" resolution.

I think what was recommended to you is an "Ultra HD" or "4K" monitor, which has higher resolution in the same space.... so everything on your screen would be SMALLER! Your operating system may be able to be set to make labels and fonts larger.

The refresh rate (144hz) has nothing to do with photo editing. 60hz is plenty for your purposes. The higher refresh rate would be more relevant to gaming or video work.

Do you calibrate your monitor? If not, that's very probably what's needed.

Uncalibrated computer monitors tend to be too bright for accurate photo editing. As a result, the user makes their images too dark. Monitor color rendition also usually is off and can use fine tuning. Any errors there will also cause the user to mis-adjust their images. And, over time monitors lose brightness and shift color rendition, so occasional re-calibration is important. If you do any printing, ultimately a calibration device will pay for itself in saved paper and ink.

A monitor calibration system includes both a colorimeter "puck" device and software to use with it. Basically you first use the device to correctly set the brightness of your monitor, then the software runs a series of color targets that the device reads for accuracy to "build" a profile that will correct the color output of the monitor whenever it's in use.

There are a lot of different calibration options. Basic ones start around $170 and the prices of fancier ones go up from there. But it's a one time purchase (I've been using the same Spyder for 8 or 10 years).

You'll find most of the options at B&H, but of course are welcome to shop around and buy elsewhere if you wish. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=monitor%20calibration&sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH&filters=fct_a_host-interface_6981%3Ausb%2Cfct_a_host-system_6982%3Amonitors%2Cfct_calibration-type_2612%3Acolor-calibration-system%2Cfct_category%3Acolor_management_hardware_12000

If you still want a new monitor, I'm really impressed with the BenQ monitors for photography: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=computer%20monitors&filters=fct_category%3Acomputer_monitors_6559%2Cfct_color-gamut_5893%3Aadobe-rgb-100%7Cadobe-rgb-99%2Cfct_screen-size_953%3A27in&searchWithin=benq In their 27" models, I notice the $599 and $799 models have the resolution folks in your club recommended. I like that they include a shade too, which can also be very helpful keeping ambient light off the screen (and is typically a $100 accessory for other monitors). When I win the lottery I'll get the $2000 32" model.
