Would you try to buy a car without A/C?

YES!

I think you would have a hard time finding a car without AC. I rarely find the need to run the AC and only use it when my wife rides with me. Several years ago I had a very popular domestic car and the AC compressor went out. The cost to repair was going to be over $1000, most of that labor. I told them no, I did not need AC and just leave it off. NO can do, this car was designed with the AC compressor pulley as an integral part of the water pump, alternator, and power steering pulley system. Without the AC functional, there was no way to run the other accessories.

As someone else mentioned, it is all about manufacturing costs. Sure a camera without video is possible and is built, but the number of people who want this is very low, and the cost to provide this limited number is high. The limited appeal and low numbers expected to be sold has to be paid for somehow.

In this car I had, the number of people who may have wanted one without AC made the cost of providing one prohibitive. So they just included it in ALL of the cars and cut the costs by making it standard equipment and integral to the design. Most likely this is the same design philosophy used on the DSLRs with video.

are there new cameras on the market that just take photos? I've been in the market for a new camera, purchased a Nikon D780, Very pleased with it but why waste all the software on movies? Is there a camera on the market without the movie package?

Most digital camera's come with a movie option. I personally do not use it, but many young photographers embrace it. It is sort of a two for one option that continues to improve along with the still side of things.
The new Sony a1 shoots stills at an amazing rate of 30 frames per second, it looks like the still side of the camera is catching up to the movie side.
Don't discount it, embrace it. Enjoy it. Challenge your self with it. COME ON MAN, join in the fun that is video.

While I realize some people are willing to actually pay more to get a Nikon Df because they don't want video, camera manufacturers include it because it is only software and adds very little to the cost of the camera, and some people do want it. It wouldn't be cost effective to offer models with and without video.

With all due respect I can't help but wonder how many people actually buy the Nikon Df because of no video capability. That may be one of the features they do not want but to purchase an expensive camera just because it does not have a feature they are not forced to use seems incredible.

I don't think most people buy a Df because it doesn't have video, but there are some here who have said that they did. That's hard for me to understand.

Do you take advice from someone who doesn't take it themselves?

I would say the added costs would come from changing the production line. Leaving out video would be like producing astro versions, just switch the hot mirror, but Canon and Nikon charge considerably more than a different hot mirror costs. The same would apply to B&W versions, just make a few chips with no Bayer or even a clear one if physically needed fir some reason.

I did! So if I am going to buy another camera it has to be a Leica or some medium format.

I for one do not use the video capability on my cameras, and so I disabled the video button in the menu. I did this because I would quite frequently accidently turn on video during shooting.
