Fat or Just Puffed Up?

During Kansas thirteen day below zero stretch of weather, I noticed that some of the birds had their feathers all puffed up in an attempt to keep warm. Others like the Downy Woodpeckers seemed to not be puffed up and appeared to be slender. in the cold. Does this Red, Male Cardinal appear to UHH photographers to appear to have this feathers puffed up, or is he genuinely fat, or both?

Dear shangyrhee...I'll refer him to Marie Osmond to go on a diet. Thanks for your comment.

Dear Toment...I'll cut back on his rations and have him do pushups like we did in the Marine Corps.

The bird is NOT fat. His feathers are puffed up. Birds arrange their feathers in different ways for thermoregulation and to express emotion. Birds do not overstuff themselves and eat when hungry. Light weight is needed for flight and survival thus their physiology limits greatly fat storage.
