Here is a link to a very comprehensive tutorial on the triggering system in question.

It depends if you are looking for a simple trigger or one that can provide iTTL. Pocket Wizards are the pro's choice and for good reason - they just work as advertised. However I've gotten excellent service from Yongnuo triggers - which are a fraction of the price and come in two flavors - basic trigger or ful-blown iTTL. The basic ones are around $38 for a pair of transceivers (RF-603 II), and the iTTL version at $79 for a pair (YN-622 II). The 603 can be used as a wireless remote shutter trigger, and the 622, while forfeiting the shutter trigge feature, can fully integrate with any supported iTTL flash, from Nikon and/or other vendors. It also has an optional commander module, and they fully support FP-Sync. For all intents and purposes they offer the same feature set as the more costly Pocket Wizards.

I have the YN-622 also. Its manual is worthless but a couple of YouTube videos show how to do it easy enough. They work great.

The trigger set you have should work fine ASSUMING you bought the ones designated for Nikon. The video linked above by E.LL. Shapiro should solve your problem.

I have been happy with yongnuo 622n along with the tx on my d500. Not to pricey and works well.

I need some guidance on a flash trigger for my D500 and SB-700 flash. I made the mistake of purchasing an Altura wireless flash trigger set thinking it would work with my combination. I tried everything I could think of without success. I would love to hear the hogs set me straight on what I need to wirelessly trigger my SB-700 from my D500. I would like to have radio triggers.

Thanks.

I have an Altura wireless trigger set and have used it with a D7200 and a D500, and they fired my flashes correctly. I used the trigger set with 3 different brands and they all worked fine. You need a receiver attached to the flash and the trigger on the camera for it to work. If you are wanting the iTTL to work, you do have to make sure the Altura trigger set you get offers iTTL since not all the sets do.

I have PocketWizard Mini-TT1 and Flex-TT5 units. You need to update the firmware for the latest camera releases. You download the PocketWizard Utility for this. Connect the unit to your computer with the supplied mini USB cable and use the utility to do firmware updates.

Here is one more thing to be aware of with PocketWizard TTL radios. They have come out with a new "E" release firmware. That firmware is not compatible with their legacy firmware. You can update older PocketWizard units with the new "E" release firmware.

That's a good point about the new firmware. But it is not applicable to the Mini-TT1 or Canon Flex TT5 or 6 as of right now. If you have legacy equipment not upgradeable, then upgrading is a moot point and any newer equipment doesn't have to be upgraded or if it is preloaded with the new software, downgrade.

Here is a picture of the set I have. It's all set up correctly as the flash fires when I push the test button on the Altura receiver but the flash won't fire when the shutter button is pressed on the D500. Is this the same set you have?

In the photo shooting menu, on the D500, there is the flash control section and it is grayed out so I can't set any flash control settings. I have a feeling Nikon has some proprietary extras a person needs to make a remote flash work with the D500 but you said the Alturas work fine on your D500 so the only other thing I can think of is the camera isin't talking to the flash through the transmitter/receiver? Really confused here.
