Not so. The 100 works BETTER !!!

My other post explains. But if you really insist on a 60, send me your 100 and I’ll send you exactly the 60 that you insist you need. I’m very helpful either way :-)

If you wanna swap lenses, PM me. This thread is getting too bloated to keep up with reading it.

Hi Peter. I'm going to use the Nikon ES-2 + adaptor and film/slide holder, along with the 60mm f2.8D. I don't have the D850 yet, but will get one as soon as I can raise some cash. I don't have GAS! Either the D850 or D780 has the in camera program to digitalize and create positive image. The resolution of the D850 would be great, but 25 MP from D780 should be fine.
This method will be using the camera shutter a lot if digitally converting a lot of slides or film.
Check YouTube for various videos on method. Thanks for asking.

You will not beat up your shutter if you engage Live View. You will need LV to get accurate focus anywho.

If you’re doing all this just to convert from 100mm to 60mm for slide and film copying, then keep your current lens. The ES2 and ES1 work well with almost any macro lens, including your current 100/2.8D.

You will need a few 52mm empty tubes to increase the slide to lens space. Those are all over EBay for about $15 per set (of four) and are called either Nikon manual tubes or Nikon K tube set.

There are multiple recents posts about it in the general discussion forum. I use various lenses with my ES1. See pix below. Your rig will use MUCH less “plumbing” cuz your sensor is larger than m4/3 cameras in the pix. The rigs in the pix deliver 80MP raw files and can optically crop deep into a slide or neg by removing some stovepipe.

Thanks UserID for your knowledgeable suggestions. I was aware of the need for extending the length of the light path with the 105 lens, and didn't want to have to do that. I just wanted to work with a simple, smaller, supersharp rig for the digital conversion. True, it'll be tougher to shoot bees with the 60mm, but if I really want to spend a lot of time trying to get good bee shots, I'll go look for a 150 or 200 mm macro beast. Currently, I'm having a heck of a time shooting tiny stuff at higher mag with reversed enlarger lenses on extension tubes. Now, that's a challenge and a ton of fun on the cheap! I'm never into GAS.

By the way, I love to read your contributions all over UHH. Keep up the comments to help everyone. Take care.

You're absolutely right on that, and I intend to use it.

Hehehe, UserID. One man's favorite is another's discard. Sounds like the 105 on an extension tube works well for you. I guess I'll go down the 60 route for now. But I appreciate your suggestions very much. They're super helpful.

Hello User ID. Thank you much for providing these very instructive photos. I'm going to bookmark them for future reference if I ever get to experimenting with your setup. I understand the need for the tube spacers between the longer lens and subject (slide). The light source in front would have to be quite more intense, I imagine, since it's the square of whatever the distance multiple is. That's one of the reasons I was trying to keep things simpler. Are these spacers the same thing as macro extension tubes with lens and camera mounts on the respective ends?

This AF D lens is very highly regarded and popular. In addition to being a superb macro lens, this Micro Nikkor also produces beautiful portraiture. Having used the AF-S VR 105mm Micro Nikkor G lens also, I along with many other Nikon die-hards prefer the D lens – it’s simply sharper and at half the price of the AF-S VR G lens! So why am I selling this great lens? To avert GAS, I’m exchanging it for another legendary D lens, the Micro Nikkor 60mm f2.8D, to have a super sharp lens I can use to digitalize my big film and slide collection in-camera, while at other times shoot standard 1:1 macro. I’ve also been concentrating on doing more ultra-macro at greater than 1:1 magnification, using reversed lenses on extension tubes, instead.

I’m neurotically fastidious in handling and caring for my gear, so this lens is in superb overall condition. The Autofocus, Manual focus, and aperture ring all work perfectly. The aperture blades are clean and move smoothly. Buttons, switches all function normally.

Cosmetically, there are only minor surface marks on the lens housing and caps from usage. The lens mount is like new. See photos. The front lens surface has always been protected by a filter. Thus, the glass remains crystal clear with no scratches, haze, fungus, or significant internal dust.

Price $325 includes insured shipping within the continental USA.
Interested buyers, please PM me for my PayPal email address and instructions. Thank you.

There’s no loss of light vs the 60. The exposure for 1:1 macro is what it is regardless of the gear used.

You apparently realize that the tubes are not used for macro focus purposes but are merely a way to hold the subject in place at the proper distance. You could as well use PVC plumbing. So don’t let the presence of the tubes trigger thoughts of “macro tube light losses”. There are no “macro tubes” in use. The tubes are repurposed.

The tubes are 52mm M to F threaded. They ship with adapters for both ends that fit F body and F lens, but those are not used here. Just the 52mm tube that makes the ES-1or2 deeper, as needed. Never put such adapters on a modern F body. Just clip them to each other, bayonet to bayonet, and the combo becomes just one more 52mm M to F short tube.

Too often something simple is not so simple or brief to explain in text. I did post pix but the very sight of “macro extension tubes” can trigger certain assumptions. So, more explaining.

Anywho you sold the 100, a holy grail to many, so that should mean a happy hog on both ends of the sale. Now you hafta find a 60. PM me if you aren’t finding one when you need it.

User ID, you've been a tremendous help, just as you've always been with your many helpful posts here on UHH.
Much appreciated by all, including me.
