Best advice so far! You've made the switch to mirrorless. The next goal should be to eliminate the need for FTZ not buy another. Use your money to by Z lenses and sell off your old lenses

The problem being Nikon hasn’t released the long zooms or the macros for Z mount yet. Hopefully later this year.

Just looking for alternate opinions on this.

I decided a year plus ago to sell my D800 and get a Z6 with 24-70. Sold a few F mount lenses with or after, such as AF 50 mm and 28-300. Bought the 24-200 last fall and decided the 24-70 ought to go so it is at MPB for sale.

Also got the Z50 with two lens kit (16-50 and 50-250) last fall. Impressed by it so gave my D5600 and 18-300 to my daughter-in-law. I have 10-24 which I can use with it with FTZ but generally prefer FX for wide angle so won’t use it much. It plus FTZ is big and heavy.

Decided I’m going to take only the Z6 on major upcoming trip involving air travel. But needed a wide angle because 16-35 + FTZ too large and heavy. So now have Z 14-30, which is nice and will do the job for the trip. So with it I no longer need the 16-35, so it is at Adorama for sale.

Decided yesterday I needed to try some images with the F mount Macro 105 on the Z6, which required the FTZ. The FTZ was on the 200-500 attached to Z50 for birds. It was a multi step process to get the switch done. I get annoyed by fussing.

While looking at KEH site for status on my Z 24-70 I noted a like new D610 could be had for about $500. Subtract the $300+ they’ll give for the 24-700 it can be had for a little over $200. And my Z6 batteries work with it.

Adorama has my 16-35 but hasn’t gotten back to me yet on final price. It will be about $500. But I can tell them no thanks and they’ll ship it back.

Thoughts on choices.

PS: I am inclined to be frugal but money isn’t an issue here. I always compare my photography hobby to past endeavors like boats and ATVs...and don’t come close.

IDguy, you are a victim of multiple major gas attacks. Because of GAS I have four DSLRs but I use them all on a regular basis and have no intention of selling or trading any of them. They are part of my journey and have always been part of my plan. For you I would stop buying gear, sell what is already up for sale and learn to use and love your full frame z6 and crop z50. See if they can be part of your plan before adding or subtracting from what you have. Until you have a plan do not let GAS consume you. Buying and selling can be very very expensive. Ron

I'm feeling like I have good self-restraint. I only have 3 DSLRs.

Been reading your posts for a few weeks - I'm not the judgemental type - but, should I send my pal Robin to burst your GAS balloon ?

Mine are very similar. I hate steep learning curves. That way I can enjoy them and not review the instructions all the time. They can also be purchased/replaced at very low financial outlay. Three of mine are “Upgrades” from my original D50 but most would even find that description questionable. My main concern is that they produce very acceptable images and they do.

It is about not having to fuss with the FTZ. I initially thought it wouldn’t be an issue. It is.

An option I considered is just getting another FTZ. Unfortunately they want $250 for one if you get it without camera and there aren’t any used out there yet.

That's always the dilemma with mirrorless, when you have older lenses to adapt. The adapters are heavy, may or may not use all of the features of older lenses, probably won't work as quickly, may not enable all features of the new camera body, may degrade wide angle performance...

I came to the conclusion after buying a couple of adapters and trying two more, that in most cases, I prefer brand-native, mount-native glass on my gear. When things are engineered to work specifically with one another, I get the best performance. Ergonomics matter to me, a lot.

While Canon and Nikon both did a decent job with their adapters, they are still adapters. They add weight, bulk, workflow time, and often AF response time. And they don't work with all lenses, just most lenses. I can see using adapters for expensive specialty optics and for special effects, but generally, I avoid them.

Heh, heh!

I think I broke it. At least put a slow leak in it. There is no longer a D610 in my future. Instead I have purchased the $15 adapter which will mostly reside on the 200-500, as described above. So I will let the sales of my 16-35 and Z 24-70 go through, which will mostly pay for my recent acquisition of the Z 14-30.

I'll also add an alert on KEH in case they get in some used Nikon FTZ adapters. I'll pay up to $100 for one but not $250. Maybe a little more if the $15 adapter doesn't pan out.

If Nikon's Z implementation of the 200-500 (or 600) is priced reasonably it will go to the top of my GAS list. But I don't see myself replacing the f2.8 105 nor the FX AFS 70-300 which need adapting. They are both heavy and large enough that the adapter isn't a big add. I might also get rid of my DX AFP 70-300 because the DX 50-250 on the Z50 is close enough. I won't get much for it though because Nikon is selling refurbs for $200 and mine is a gray market...which I paid $200 for.

I’ve seen *exactly* that same verbatim advice soooo damnt often that I’m all the more convinced, every freakin time I see it again, that it’s mainly just a whole lotta parrot chatter.

Toss Polly a peanut butter cracker and indulge however your gas leads you. Be sure to use *plenty* of peanut butter ... to gum up Polly’s squawking as long as possible. Enjoy the ride. Keep in mind that it’s a one way trip. Prolly’s tiny pea brain knows nothing of that. Awwwrk !

That’s too bad that this upsets you so much. I thought the advice was right on and hopefully a help to the op.

There’s currently a used Nikon FTZ on eBay for $150.00

I don't understand you guys, different lens or cameras for everything. I bought a Canon 5Dc years ago and have acquired too many lens for it. I have a 20mm, a 35mm, a 50mm, an 85mm, a 100mm, a 70-200 and a 70-300 plus an extender. I can't remember the last time I used the 20mm and I certainly don't need both an 85 and a 100. And I could probably lose the 70-200 even though it's better than the 70-300 which covers it. And there's probably not enuf distance between the 35 an the 50 to justify both. And I think that I've used the extender once. Of course, I 've only been taking pictures for 70 years (give or take) so what do I know? Maybe I really do need a few more!

Harry PS My first digital was a 40d, it lives in a drawer in my desk, along with a Nikon or two but at least I don't still have the Voightlander or Contax that were my first 35mms, bought while serving in Korea. (Traded the V on the Contax, sold the Contax while I was in college and needed cash. Only thing I've ever sold, other than a few puppies and Foxfire's Rhea.)

Thanks. I’ll look again. When I last looked they wanted $200 used, $249 new, and a bunch of scammers asking over $300.

If the manual adapter works as I hope with the 200-500 it should hold me till they come out with the Z 200-600...if they price it reasonably.

Got to thinking the manual one won’t work at all with the new lenses where the focus ring is electronic. But I think the focus ring in manual focus is mechanical on the 200-500. That will be the first thing I check.
