So: Mirrorless or what you're used to?

(1) What you're used to will do the job and give you some exercise carrying something heavier then the mirrorless.
(2) It's always good to be in danger of learning something new.

As far as the wide angle is concerned, what do you expect to use the wide angle for? If you're going to be shooting scenery, you can do panos with something longer. If you're going to be shooting action in tight quarters, then you need a wide angle lens.

I also use the wide angle for urban images, including narrow streets in old countries and inside buildings like museums and cathedrals. The 14-30 on the Z6 will be awesome for that.

I often do multi shot panos particularly when hiking. The Z50 with 16-50 is awesome for that. And sometimes the iPhone.

I can see how it confuses. That is why I’m dithering.

It is about not having to fuss with the FTZ. I initially thought it wouldn’t be an issue. It is.

An option I considered is just getting another FTZ. Unfortunately they want $250 for one if you get it without camera and there aren’t any used out there yet.

I pretty much live by adapters, therefore I’m not empathetic toward your objection to fussing. Yes, I’d prefer to NOT have that extra step involved in certain lens swaps, so I really DO “hear you”, but I nevertheless tend to see you as letting it loom too large in your consciousness. I suggest that you acknowledge that as a (possible) fact and just “ get over it”.

OTOH, if only maximum convenience will suit your photographic way of life, then if you’ve got the $$, then quit dithering and do a complete upgrade.

If you have maybe two F-mount lenses that you’d never carry at the same time, then use those with the FTZ. Just make the FTZ part of whichever F-mount lens is in your bag that day. No fussing, just an inch added to the length of that lens. That is essentially how I deal with my “adapter lifestyle”.

Obviously YMMV.

Get the Z lenses you need and sell everything else. No more confusion!
You may even consider renting the appropriate lenses for the trip.

Simple, get as many ftz adapters as needed to use the legacy lenses until Nikon produces new S glass to match your needs.

I can only respond to the D610. I love mine. Paired with the 24-70 I feel like I can’t lose. My 105 mm also makes me feel this way.

Just looking for alternate opinions on this.

I decided a year plus ago to sell my D800 and get a Z6 with 24-70. Sold a few F mount lenses with or after, such as AF 50 mm and 28-300. Bought the 24-200 last fall and decided the 24-70 ought to go so it is at MPB for sale.

Also got the Z50 with two lens kit (16-50 and 50-250) last fall. Impressed by it so gave my D5600 and 18-300 to my daughter-in-law. I have 10-24 which I can use with it with FTZ but generally prefer FX for wide angle so won’t use it much. It plus FTZ is big and heavy.

Decided I’m going to take only the Z6 on major upcoming trip involving air travel. But needed a wide angle because 16-35 + FTZ too large and heavy. So now have Z 14-30, which is nice and will do the job for the trip. So with it I no longer need the 16-35, so it is at Adorama for sale.

Decided yesterday I needed to try some images with the F mount Macro 105 on the Z6, which required the FTZ. The FTZ was on the 200-500 attached to Z50 for birds. It was a multi step process to get the switch done. I get annoyed by fussing.

While looking at KEH site for status on my Z 24-70 I noted a like new D610 could be had for about $500. Subtract the $300+ they’ll give for the 24-700 it can be had for a little over $200. And my Z6 batteries work with it.

Adorama has my 16-35 but hasn’t gotten back to me yet on final price. It will be about $500. But I can tell them no thanks and they’ll ship it back.

Thoughts on choices.

PS: I am inclined to be frugal but money isn’t an issue here. I always compare my photography hobby to past endeavors like boats and ATVs...and don’t come close.

The D610 is a step back from the D800 that you sold - you're confusing yourself - stay with mirrorless and forget the rest.

.......very little logic to the question - if there is one - so I can find little logic for any answers.

Sounds like you’re considering a step backwards for the want of a “good” deal? I thought I was the only one who made those foolish moves? (Full disclosure, I still do.)

GAS is good. We have to support camera manufacturers.

Best advice so far! You've made the switch to mirrorless. The next goal should be to eliminate the need for FTZ not buy another. Use your money to by Z lenses and sell off your old lenses

Makes perfect sense to me.

The 610 is functionally pretty close to the 800. But selling the 800 brings in more cash while keeping the 610 costs little $$ (in terms of merch not sold).

Also, the 610 is a fully developed product while the 800 is the earliest precursor of its series. Also not neglecting the slight size difference favoring the 610, the 610 is a keeper ... unless acoarst a user has simply outgrown SLRs altogether.

+++++++++++++++++++++

I still keep a 610 around. He’s sort of a friendly little critter. I just scratch him behind the ears now and then and it feels loved. He’s not 100% retired, still assigned to testing lens shades ;-)

I, too, am awkwardly moving into the mirrorless world with a Z50 and new (to me) Z6. However, as a birder, I see no reason at all to give up my D500. With three somewhat different bodies, I have yet to settle on the optimal set of lenses, and I have taken the step of purchasing a second FTZ adapter. However, I would not recommend buying thr D610. What would you use it for that the z6 can’t do? Spend the money on Z lenses.

Yep, I love my Z7 but my 200-500 lives on the D500 for wildlife. I would invest in a second FTZ adapter before a D610. For macro, whether you’re using the built in focus shift feature for stacking or focusing manually with focus peaking turned on you will find your Z6 far superior to a D610.

I have a Sony RX10MIV and it’s a great camera for what it does but it can’t touch my Z7 for certain things.
